Home builders expected to post narrower losses, declining revenue

More

Still wondering whether the housing market has bottomed? Well, the next couple of days should offer some clues, as pending home sales numbers for April are due out later this morning, and home builders Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) and Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL) will be releasing their quarterly results. While both are expected to have narrowed their losses, their revenues are expected to have shrunk by half, as well.

For the quarter in which the New Jersey-based builder was dropped from the S&P MidCap 600, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect Hovnanian to have narrowed its net loss to $1.26 per share, from $5.29 per share in the same period of the previous year. However, revenue for the quarter ended April 30 is expected to have fallen 55.2% to $347.7 million. And the company's losses have been larger than analysts expected in the past five quarters.

Analysts, on average, expect a long-term EPS growth rate of 6.0% from Hovnanian. The share price has surged more than 220% in the past three months, but is still about 65% lower than it was a year ago.

Hovnanian is scheduled to release its second-quarter 2009 results today after market close, and to discuss them in a conference call Wednesday at 11:00 AM ET. You can catch the live webcast of the call on the company's website.

For the quarter in which Toll Brothers completed a senior note offering and was recognized for being shareholder friendly, analysts expect the luxury home builder to have narrowed its net loss to 44 cents per share, from 59 cents per share a year ago. But revenue for the quarter ended April 30 is expected to have fallen 52.0% to $393.3 million, which is in line with preliminary numbers. The company's losses have been larger than expected in the past couple of quarters, but only by pennies per share.

Analysts, on average, expect Toll Brothers' long-term EPS growth rate to be 8.2%. The share price is down about 12% since the beginning of the year, and also about 11% lower than it was a year ago.

Toll Brothers is scheduled to release its second-quarter 2009 results Wednesday before market open, and to discuss them in a conference call hosted by CEO Robert Toll at 2:00 PM ET. You can catch the live webcast of the call on the company's website.
