McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) struck gold when it entered the breakfast market decades ago. Today it's fighting for Starbucks' boutique coffee business. Where will it turn next to expand its business? How about electricity?
According to our sister blog, Engadget, a new North Carolina McDonald's will include electric vehicle (EV) recharging stations, part of the ChargePoint network. While you stuff your face, your car could be stuffing its battery.
The cross-marketing potential is intriguing. Since most current EVs take a couple of hours to recharge, McD's would have a captive audience to buy desserts and frou-frou coffee drinks to fill the idle time. It could offer discounts on fill-ups with meals, and Happy Watts meals for the kids. And with over 30,000 locations worldwide, what company is better placed to establish a recharging network?
It could also refuel those green vehicles retrofitted to run on French fry grease.
While this business might seem inconsequential today, given the paucity of EVs on the American roads, vehicles by major manufacturers such as Subaru and Mitsubishi are already rolling down the assembly line. The Subaru Stella will appear on the Japanese market in August, while the first Mitsubishi's i-MiEV will hit the road this month and go on sale to the public next April.
So welcome to McDonald's. Would you like some electrons with your Big Mac and fries?

Why not put the re-charge at state unemployment locations and other points of bureaucracy?

If Obama's energy policy does not change and we pass Cap and Trade having an electric outlet will be useless. We will not have enough electrictly to power our businesses or homes much less 100 million electric cars.

Neat...but they should build wind turbines or solar charging stations so that the power doesn't come from dirty coal.

Um... Did anyone else notice that the third paragraph is the same as the fourth? I know that doesn't bother some people, but it is bugging the crap out of me. And the fact that it is happening more and more bugs me. Hmmm... Maybe AOL needs to make sure these stories are EDITED before they post them. Too many countries already think we are stupid, ignorant American's. Let's not give them more fuel...

So who exactly is going to pay for this electricity? And the increased rates imposed by cap and trade? There is nothing in the article about that. Used to be one could charge their laptop at some coffee shops. No longer. Businesses notice TREMENDOUS increases in their utility consumption, and realized it was from people using their electronic equipment while they sipped their lattes. They were earning money while the coffee house was paying for it. I quit going to any place that allows select patrons "free" extras while they charge users and non-users the same for their services and products.

"The Stella EV employs what is know as fast charge lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are capable of being charged to 80% capacity in as little as 15 minutes, getting you back on the road in no time." from the Stella link at the end of the article.

how is adding car recharging outlets "green"? it only adds to the demands of the power grid that is supplied by nuclear and coal - - both of which obama wants to shitcan. there is no such thing as "green" jobs or a "green" economy; it's all just marketing wordsmithing.

Um... ...this is in North Carolina. How many EV vehicles do they really have over there?!? Im in a huge metroplex and I havent seen one. The only thing that comes close are hybrids, and theyre hybrids, they recharge themself. I tell you wants going to happen. Theyre going to remove yet another parking space for us to use. I have already seen it at some places years ago. A special parking space upfront for electric vehicles. There is no electrical outlet where they absolutely need that space. And just like with handicap spots, vehicles that park in it dont qualify, and dont get penalized. As a business person what are you going to do? tick off a customer?
I see two things happening:
1) idiots are going to park in the spots with non EV vehicles, probably because things like that are always up front. This will cause EV owners to not be able to recharge. This will also cause good innocent drivers to become annoyed at both EV vehicles and those who park there
2) the idea becomes successful, and now you have 4 handicap spots and 4 EV spots... ...where do you park? At the grocery store across the street

Just how many electric cars do you see on the street every day? I don't see any.
Who is going to pay for this service? Someone has to pay the electric bill. Will it be be owner of the car or the prices go up to pay for this??

If the government thinks we are running out of oil, fuel to fill our cars, how can they think french fry grease will be enough to meet our needs? While our electric bills haven't gone up near as much as our natural gas bills, how many charges can you get on your car before your electric bill will be sky high as well? The govenment should never play chess because they don't even seem to think one step ahead as is evidenced by the toilets we have that need to be flushed 2 or 3 times because they have EPA approved smaller water tanks. Either that or they are deliberately sabotaging our way of life. How can that be? Democrats are in power & they "care about people."

Seems like a waste of resources to me, by previous posts. How about an additonal trash can for recycled items, plates, cups, bottles, utensils ect... ? Let's start there.

MEMO TO EVERY INTELLIGENT FREE-THINKING AMERICAN, and TO OBAMA: CAP & TRADE IS PERHAPS THE MOST ANTI-FREE MARKET, ANTI-AMERICAN LEGISLATION EVER SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED BY CONGRESS. FURTHER, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE THAT ANYTHING WE DO WILL SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGE OR STOP "GLOBAL WARMING". FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS BEFORE MAN, THERE HAVE BEEN MAJOR NATURAL CYLES OF GLOBAL COOLING AND WARMING. DON'T ATTACK AND BURDEN THE AMERICAN BUSINESSES WHICH PROVIDE JOBS AND A HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING IN THE USA, FOR SOMETHING WHICH MAY "FEEL GOOD" BUT HAS NO CHANCE OF MAKING ANY REAL STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE IN GLOBAL WARMING. THIS WILL EXPORT EVEN MORE JOBS OUT OF AMERICA, ALL FOR ALMOST NO MEASURABLE CLIMATE IMPROVEMENT. CALL YOUR SENATOR. VOTE NO.
