I guess Kmart -- part of Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD) -- has exhausted every other marketing idea it had for luring us back to the shopping aisles. How else to account for launching what must the earliest Christmas shopping campaign in history? The website for the chain now features a snowy village decked out in holiday cheer.
The banner reads "Take A Stroll Down Christmas Lane," and suggests that you can 'beat the Christmas rush" (ha!) by buying your stocking stuffers, gifts, and decorations now. Personally, I can't even predict who I'll still like well enough to give a gift to in six months. Stuff happens.
The campaign shows little thought or investment beyond a landing page and a few links to existing catalog items. Dare I suggest that this is typical Kmart, unimaginative and short-sighted? I haven't even bought my Halloween costume and Thanksgiving turkey yet. Are they giving up on those holidays?
Will Kmart even be around in January to accept returns? With promotions like this, I have to wonder.

It makes sense to me because Kmart offers lay away. Shop now for the best deals and pay a little each month without having to store the gifts at home.

Kmart...still around? Several stores closed near me and I assumed they all went belly up. I do not recall seeing their ads. At this point, they gotta be on the short list.

Hallmark Gold Crown Stores have done Christmas in July for years! Christmas ornaments will actually be available this weekend. This is not a new idea at all.

Most major retailers run some sort of 'Christmas in July' program. Why is this any different? Sorry, but how long has the reporter covered 'marketing and advertising', that he doesn't know this?
Sounds like desperation for a topic to write about. This isn't news. (Although it did serve nicely to publicize Kmart's promotion for them.)

I do every bit of shopping right here. Why ride around and around in the parking lot, be aware of thieves, crowds in the stores, no sales assistants and even the nicest stores are a mess. Or these people who camp out at K-Mart to save $20 on a toy or TV and kill the security guard on the rampage in. Around the Holidays, most companys send your purchase in a pretty Holiday box so no wrapping is required. And you don't waste your weekends, or that exhausted feeling if you go after work.

I start Christmas shopping for the next year the day after Christmas. With all sibblings on both sides get it while it is on clearence. Great sales ususally end up with great stuff for 75 to 90 % off. With so many of the grandchildren having fall birthdays have to start early.

ARGH! I'm so tired of the commercialism surrounding Christmas!! Every year we hear the daily stats as to whether or not the hard-working, tax-paying citizens of the USA are spending enough for retailers to be able to report bright 4th quarter earnings... ENOUGH!! I know people who take part times jobs so that they can buy their spoiled, over-indulged children more shit they don't need for Jesus' birthday... wouldn't your child prefer, and be better off if they spent their TIME with the child instead? I can't stand the Christmas in July ad promotions. I'm sure they are just trying anything new to counteract the bad economy and even more sure my neighbor will be there standing in line at the layaway... that woman just loves Christmas so much that she puts her decorations up October 1 no matter what - she likes to enjoy the "season" of Christmas. Never mind that we have her Rudolph standing over my graveyard at Halloween, or my Thanksgiving displays - it's all bright brinking lights over at her house.

I use Kmart layaways all yr long. They are a great way to get anything you want, and clearance items are allowed at super low prices.I start Christmas shopping in the summer,so this is nothing new here.So long as they don't decorate trees in the store right now. That's TOO much, too soon.

Doesn't matter to me if it's July or December...I don't
shop at Sears OR K-Mart. Their Customer Service
stinks. I've had nothing but trouble with Sears on
my washing machine, freezer & new dishwasher. No
compensation for time off work multiple times (with
them a no-show) other than more excuses. Anyone
who makes major purchases from either of these stores
will be sorry!
