We might be tempted to think, in this day and age, that a move as stupid as this one could not happen in our enlightened business world. However, the CEO of American Apparel (AMEX: APP), seems to think otherwise.According to a story provided by Gawker.com; "American Apparel's ... madman CEO, Dov Charney is demanding the firing of employees he deems unattractive and thus detrimental to the "AA aesthetic."
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that people (especially in America) are ultra sensitive to negative comments about appearance. It also does not take a great deal of intelligence to recognize that the firing of employees based on their looks is a stupidly discriminatory practice. So, being that this project is being undertaken at the sole direction of CEO Charney, one does not have to spend much time analyzing exactly who is the stupid one over there.
The story from Gawker implies that American Apparel's store managers are being forced through intimidation to fire plain looking employees for the slightest mistakes. The supposition is that CEO Charney is simply weeding out his less than glamorous employees.
One could easily suppose that if CEO Charney does not reverse his course, relent on his aesthetic witch hunt, and reinstate employees who may have been fired for questionable reasons, things could get very ugly for American Apparel in one big hurry.

I think we can all agree that something more than an anonymous tip story from GAWKER should be required for stock analysis. But seriously, a fashion company that caters to young people has to maintain a certain look on the floor. It's the CEO's job to be updated on who represents the company.

I had the same thoughts as Richard, (re: using Gawker's tip as a source). Was there at all an attempt to contact American Apparel about this story, or was the plan to just take Gawker's anonymous tip on faith and proceed to talk about how stupid Dov Charney is?

Gary,
You & your sources are reliable. But have you seen the story independently reported? I am very distrustful of single-source internet news, particularly when the action reported is so obviously ill-advised. But if accurate, Charney's employment can be measured in hours.

You may also want to note that Dov Charney has been sued more than once for sexual harassment, and that American Apparel employees now must sign a statement that they understand that they will work in a "sexually charged" atmosphere. The wording is mine, but close.

Even if this story isnt true, I can see Charneys point of view. I work with the public and it is very important to maintain a professional and attractive apperance. You, can be heavy, you can be plain looking, but it doesnt mean that you should disreagrad your cleanliness, make-up and coordinating outfits.
I have have sent salespeople home for coming to work dirty, or coming to work in short short skirts with flip-flops.
Frankly, if you own a company or a retail stores you should have the right to create the image of your company in the way you want. You are paying people to represent YOUR company.

If this is true then the company should be boycotted. However, if it's not true then whoever is spreading rumors should be very carefull and be perpared to get sued. This would be slander and not fair to company. Maybe some poor ass employee got fired for actually doing something against the company and is now spreading lies. Anyway, I hope it is not true, would be very sad.

Whether or not this story is true, I believe that the "fired employees" would have a suit against him since it is discriminatory... for I'm sure that this would include things such as age and being handicapped.

Sure...I'd hire a piss-pants homeless bum to represent my company...It makes me seem more "politically correct", after all, a good liberal shouldn't worry about his company...actually selling anything...right???

This unattractive CEO has the audacity to judge the looks of others... You've got to be kidding me. Have you seen this guy? What's with the mustache and muttonchops? Besides this guys sells T-Shirts not Armani Suits. I will however give him props for one thing, and thats for moving his company back to the United States from Mexico. But I don't think the employment of Americans was his motivation. I say boycott his crappy clothes until his mirror breaks from his own ugly reflexion.

Man, this guy is dumb. If you're going to go around firing ugly people, you really have to do it yourself. You can't tell people that sort of thing. How hard would it really be to just go by employee ID pictures and have letters sent out? At least you can't really prove you were fired for being ugly unless someone is yapping about it =/
