Closing Bell: Profit-taking leaves the markets directionless (BAC, COH, GOOG, USU, VLO, V)

More

Today was a dud from the start as profit takers were in there unloading gains as the impatient buyers try to gradually build positions in stocks they feel they have missed. For an earnings season trading day, this was a low-impact day. There was some negative consumer confidence data, but the Case-Shiller data showed signs that home prices are stabilizing.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,096.42 -12.09 (-0.13%)
S&P 500 979.60 -2.58 (-0.26%)
Nasdaq 1,975.51 +7.62 (0.39%)

Top Upgrades and Downgrades

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) rose on reports that its 6,100 branch network would be cut down by roughly 10%, but no real details were in about how many locations could be closed. It also settled a case with Parmalatt. This was taken as a positive and shares were up 2% at $13.38 late in the trading day.

Coach Inc. (NYSE: COH) reported earnings that were just in line with analyst expectations of $0.43 EPS and revenue fell 0.5 percent from a year earlier, also in line with expectations. Shares recovered off of lows but were still down by 2% at $27.84 late in the day.

Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) was down on two bits of news. Apple rejected its voice app and it partnered with Visible World in its push to offer TV advertisers more targeted advertising options. Shares were down 1.6% at $437.75 late in the day.

USEC Inc. (NYSE: USU) was the disaster of the day after the government loan guarantee for its new American Centrifuge Plant was denied. This was an unexpected blow, and shares were down 35% at $4.01 late in the day. This also hit other nuclear related stocks.

Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE: VLO) was a very disappointing earnings story, despite being slightly less of a loss than expected. This sets the tone for some things to expect in the space, and here is a primer for this week's major energy earnings on deck.

Visa, Inc. (NYSE: V) made a surprise announcement that president John C. Morris will be stepping down. The company did maintain that it continues to meet or exceed all current financial guidance. Unfortunately, the company is too young to be losing a president or top officer. Shares were down almost 3% at $66.25 late in the trading day.
