Closing Bell: Markets down after jobs, retail data; SIRI, NDAQ, CSCO, COST, BAC

More

Today, another jobs report was released ahead of tomorrow's unemployment data. The Bank of England kept rates steady but adopted a weaker currency policy and larger program that caused some more interest in gold.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,256.26 -24.71 (-0.27%)
S&P 500 997.08 -5.64 (-0.56%)
Nasdaq 1,9973.16 -19.81 (-1.00%)

Sirius XM Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) was a bit boring in trading volume after it posted a net loss of -$0.01 EPS, as expected; revenues were $590.8 million vs. $607.8 million estimates. What helped the company was that it now sees over $400 million in 2009 adjusted income from operations, above a level of $350 million previously forecast. Shares were down 1% at $0.533 ahead of the close.

Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ) announced an end to flash trading. The electronic stock exchange also reported flat earnings at $0.47 EPS, as expected, but charges and one-time items took earnings down 37% to $0.31 EPS. BATS and other ECNs have been taking market share. Shares were up 1.4% at $21.97 ahead of the close.

Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) defied gravity. Yesterday's earnings were $0.31 EPS and $8.5 billion in revenues, which exceeded forecasts. Unfortunately, the company gave light guidance and was not committed to growth unless things continue to improve in the economy. Chambers gave a better tone in an interview this morning and shares were up 0.7% at $22.32 ahead of the closing bell.

Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST) was a disappointment with a 7% decline in same-store sales, a tad worse than expected. Investors are getting tired of seeing more drops at the higher-end big box retailer, recession or not. Shares were down 0.5% at $48.78 ahead of the closing bell.

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) also defied the headlines. A judge has held off on approving the recent SEC settlement, saying that it may be too low of a penalty with too soft of a punishment for what may have been much more serious of an issue. Amazingly, this stock was positive, albeit only by $0.02 at $16.68, right before the market closed.
