Closing Bell: Bears are on vacation (AIG, GME, PETM, GOOG, SHLD, SBUX)

More

This was one of those days that the overseas stock markets had a boost for the U.S. and the strength just stayed around. Despite a worse jobless claims figure, there was an actual positive report in the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing data and the Leading Indicators did not hurt the market either.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,348.54 +69.38 (0.75%)
S&P 500 1,007.37 +10.91 (1.09%)
Nasdaq 1,989.22 +19.98 (1.01%)

Top 10 Analyst Calls

American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) was a huge winner today after the company's new CEO signaled that he will pay back the government monies, but won't rush asset sales at depressed prices. Shares were up almost 25% at $33.30 in the final trading minutes of the day.

GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) posted more than a 30% drop in earnings to $0.23 EPS as revenues fell 3.7% to $1.74 billion. More importantly, GameStop cut its 2009 forecast over consumer spending concerns and key video game delays. This is further adding to the likelihood of a weak video game market for the end of the year. Shares were down 7% at $23.41 in the final trading minutes of the day.

PetSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) was down after it beat earnings but gave weak guidance. Shares were down over 10% at $20.23 in the final trading minutes of the day.

Google Inc.
(NASDAQ: GOOG) rose after after a Goldman Sachs upgrade this morning, taking the search giant to the Conviction Buy List. Shares were up almost 4% at $461.45 in the final trading minutes of the day.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD) had a poor day as Wall Street is tired of Lampert and friends having excuses and restructuring charges. Eddie Lampert and friends posted a wider loss for the quarter. Shares were down 11.6% at $65.20 in the final trading minutes of the day.

Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX) may have some selective price hikes coming, but the catch is that some adjustments might send some drink prices lower. Shares were up 0.6% at $19.22 in the final trading minutes of the day.
