A&E plans a Jacksons reality show

More

The lead singer might be gone, but the Jacksons are still planning to go ahead with a series on A&E about their preparations for some kind of reunion.

A&E confirmed the planned series on Tuesday but was quick to point out that it had been in the works prior to Michael Jackson's death. Jodi Gomes, an executive producer with the production company behind the show, told the New York Times that the show will feature Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon, Randy and Tito "as they reunite as brothers, obviously underneath a cloud of tragedy."

No one would say whether Michael was planning to be involved in the show, but it seems highly unlikely given his reportedly poor relationship with his family and his plans for his own tour. And if MJ had been planning to do a reality show, would it really have been stuck on cable?

It won't be the first time the Jacksons have had their own television show. A Saturday morning cartoon, The Jackson 5ive aired for two seasons starting in 1971. The family also starred in a 30-minute variety show on CBS from 1976 to 1977.

The Jacksons and the network can insist all day long that the show was in the works long before Michael's death -- but clearly that event will encourage them to expedite the roll-out while the tragedy is still fresh in people's minds.

I think A&E could have quite the hit on its hands.
