Closing Bell: A directionless win... sort of (ETFC, EK, TM, VG, WSM)

More

Today was one of those directionless trading days after so many gains that there was absolutely no way to know if the markets would be up or down until the last few seconds of the day. We had a very strong durable goods reading for July and even home sales figures remained high.

Here were today's closing bell levels:

Dow 9,543.52 +4.23 (0.04%)
S&P 500 1,028.12 +0.12 (0.01%)
Nasdaq 2,024.43 +0.20 (0.01%)

Most Unusual Volume

E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC) was a rare event in the financial sector. S&P actually upgraded its debt rating after its recent refinancing activities. Shares were up 4.4% at $1.41 shortly before the close.

Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) is another one of today's unusual volume leaders. Shares had gained more than 20% to $5.59 on very active trading. The only news was its line-up at Kodak's booth at Print 09.

Toyota Motor Company (NYSE: TM) was actually the biggest winner in the cash for clunkers plan by sales with more than 19% of the sales. Shares were up 0.2% at $86.73 late in the trading session.

Vonage Holdings Corporation (NYSE: VG) was off the charts in trading volume. Despite the mobile apps market plans, there was no real news to support it, yet it stayed on as one of the most unusual stock volume movers of the entire day. Shares were up more than 30% at $2.13 late in the trading day.

Williams-Sonoma Inc. (NYSE: WSM) had a very impressive earnings report, even if you consider that it was on cost cuts and expense management. This one was up over 11% at $17.24 right before the close.
