Looking for a 4,000-square-foot duplex with four fireplaces and a doorman on the Upper East Side of New York? You are in luck, because the U.S. Marshals will put Bernie Madoff's "luxury penthouse" on the market. The apartment is believed to be worth $7 million, so if you have some extra cash laying around, you could find yourself movin' on up to the Upper East Side. A list of the amenities includes ornate cabinets, stainless steel countertops, Baccarat crystal glasses, a winding staircase to the bedroom, an atrium breakfast nook, and a flat-screen TV in one of the bathrooms. The Marshals will also put Madoff's estate in Palm Beach, Florida and three boats (one classified as a "manly" yacht, named "Bull") up for sale. The government hopes to raise "tens of millions of dollars" from these sales, which would help reimburse victims of Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Sure gives you a glimpse of the hard life that Madoff lived while he was under house arrest. Again, this shows the preferential treatment that white-collar criminals receive, I can't imagine that I would be allowed to stay in my modest Cape Cod on the West Side of Cincinnati if I had committed the same crime (of course, they may have let me - as I would then be a white-collar criminal).
The good news is that the government is taking steps to try and make amends with Madoff's victims. The bad news is that a couple of multi-million dollar homes are hitting the housing market. Perhaps there is someone out there that will spend the money on a "historic" penthouse, there is always someone ready to pay for opulence -- right? What if the Marshals don't get the money that they expect? Will they give less money back to the victims? Will they auction off the contents of the individual items in the houses (most of them have been catalogued and inventoried in boxes)? Believe it or not, I am confident that the government will make the correct decision when it comes to what to do with the Madoff properties.
