Closing Bell: Bulls 97, Bears 4 (BBY, CVM, KR, MSO, HD, MOT, S)

More

Today was another up day and you have to wonder if the woes of the world we all felt a few short months ago are just gone for good. Bernanke said the recession is effectively lower. The inventories are getting low enough that a manufacturing surge could come. And inflationary fears are not scaring traders. If this was a football game, it seems that the bulls keep scoring, and the bears just got a couple accidental safety scores.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,683.41 +56.61 (0.59%)
S&P 500 1,052.63 +3.29 (0.31%)
Nasdaq 2,102.64 +10.86 (0.52%)

Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) managed to turn into a less-bad situation, considering the 100% run from the lows. The company posted lower than expected earnings, but revenues were above estimates and the guidance came in slightly better to more in-line as well. Shares were down 5.8% at $38.07 ahead of the closing bell.

CEL-SCI Corp. (AMEX: CVM) was today's BioHealth leader on exponential trading volume because of swine flu or H1N1 news for what most consider a cancer company. This was up 51% at $1.39 on over 65 million shares right before the close, but it had been up almost 100% this morning.

The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) looked like a dirty little pig after earnings. This was down almost 8% at $20.41 late in the trading session after the company reported weak earnings and guidance. Everyone is worried about inflation in the world, yet it is seeing price pressure.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc.
(NYSE: MSO) rose today on news of the new exclusive pact with Home Depot. Shares were up 16% at $7.98 late in the trading session.

Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) was up on two bits of news. It caught an upgrade and its Co-CEO Sanjay Jha reported on Monday that his company was in talks with more carriers to sell its Cliq smartphone. Shares were up almost 4% at $9.15 ahead of the closing bell.

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) gave back some of yesterday's merger-rumor gains as more traders and investors continue to cool to the notion that a deal is imminent.
