This is the era of "naming rights" and specialized promotions, such as "XYZ Company is the sponsor of tonight's weather forecast," but a name change for the Dow Jones Industrial Average? Please.
The DJIA's name could change if parent News Corp. (NYSE: NWS) follows through and sells its stock-index business, Bloomberg News reported. Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) has been hired to evaluate potential deals.
The Dow, comprised of 30 stocks, has not only been the benchmark stock index for the United States, it's been a short-hand for how the financial world is doing, as well as a barometer of overall U.S. economic conditions and sentiment. The Dow was created in 1896 by Dow Jones co-founder Charles Dow.
Of course, the naming rights era has proved to be popular and lucrative for sports stadiums and other venues, but it's hard to picture the Dow being called anything but the Dow.
