New York Times (NYSE: NYT) Columnist Thomas Friedman returned to the subject of the United States' inordinate use of oil, and the problems it creates. Friedman asks: are we really so tough a people? If we were, we'd tax gasoline much more, build many more nuclear power plants (like France), and store waste deep in Yucca Mountain, which is totally safe -- all with the goal of propelling a paradigm shift in the nation's energy policy, one that would feature dramatically less oil consumption.
Doing the above will also seize the high ground internationally, in Friedman's interpretation: currently, with oil dominant, Russia and Venezuela and other nations in the Middle East have the high ground. Friedman said if he had the money from an additional $1 per gallon tax on gasoline (about $140 billion in revenue per year), he'd use 45% of it to pay down the budget deficit, 45% to pay for new health care, and 10% to cushion the burden the tax would put place on the poor and those who need to drive long distances.
In the process, the deficit would drop substantially, the renewable energy industry would be stimulated, the dollar would strength, the environment would be cleaner, and U.S. corporations would be stronger international competitors, as a result of decreased health care costs, among other benefits, Friedman said.
Energy Analysis: Friedman succinctly described the benefits of a mandated shift away from oil and gasoline use. One critique: Yucca Mountain is safe, but a nuclear fuel reprocessing center like France's COGEMA La Hague site represents a better option. In any event, don't look for a gasoline tax increase anytime soon: it's a non-starter in the U.S. Congress.

I agree.. more taxes on Gasoline is the Only answer to Motivate people to justify more Nukes.. Higher Utiliity Bills by just DeRegulating The Utility Co.'s is all that is needed also..
A national sales tax on gasoline is the ONLY answer..
Just have to make certain? It Is put to the Right Use an not given away to bail out businesses..again..
Has to be use first to what the other tax is Supposed to be used for.. and that is? Hwy's/Bridges Infrastructor..
They stoled that $ as well by the States and Fed over the Yrs..
Just like they did with the Lotto $ and Cig Tax $..

Tom...another intellectual millionnaire elitist who doesn't remember last summer when gas topped $4.00 a gallon and the 2nd depression of this century hit us. Tom wasn't
aware that his Liberal buddy Harry Reid shut down the Yucca Mt nuclear waste site after billions were spent.
Tom blames the USA for global warming ignoring the fact that 10,000 years ago the glaciers were a mile high over
New York ie: we've had global warming for 10,000 yrs.
Tom ignores the reality that gas is already substantially taxed ....and the deficit still increases. The gas tax won't hurt millionnaires like Tom....just working class stiffs.
The $1,700.00 annual Carbon Tax won't hurt elitists like Tom...just working stiffs. Solution? Cut Spending, Small Government, Lower Taxes and Drill for oil here in the USA!

Pigovian tax 101.
I do completely agree with Friedman though. If we ever wish to find a true cure for our oil addiction, there needs to be a reason to do so. Regulating the market, attempting to force innovation just isn't going to work.

Only the 4th comment whichj means Mr. TaxmanFreidman is way off base. Our country has trillions of oil barrells in the ground. It has natural gas and the techmology to create bio fuels of all sorts...innovation has moved from corn and soy to chicken waste...anyone who agrees with Friedman is an idiot. Cheap fuel - no matter what it is - is how this country needs to move . The cheaper the better. We have THOUSANDS of years of cheap fuel in the ground. And inonovative technologyu busting at the seams. Righ now Product cost less than the transport to get it to the buyer. Ridiculous. Cheap transport lets the consumption gate WIDE open. Social engineer taxers like Obuma and this idiot are so wrong it is absolutely borderline criminal.
Get the government out of the peoples pocket. Sell and move goods is the real answer...not tax to restriction of said same.
Insanity is defined as a willingness to forgo the obvious reality in favor of fantasy. Please Mr. Freidman...advance your fantasy somewhere else.

Freidman is an idiot. Cheap fuel to move the country is the answer not more taxes. We have trillions of barrels of oil, and trillions of tons of coal...and better we have BUrsting technology like bio fuel from chicken waste, algae, all kinds of natural forces we are just jumping with break out technology.
Taxing to restrict fuel and movement is not correct. Get government out of the way and our country can move goods and ourselves right into a HUGE burgoing economy. Heavy taxes on fuel are wrong. Cheap fuel is right.
Freidman and Obama social nincompoops are wrong. Insanity is defined as a willingness to forego obvious reality for fantasy...Anyone listening to lala Friedman is dreaming.
Thousand years of fuel right here in our own land. Technology showing breakout to the next level of need at our finger tips. The need to move goods and people cheaply...and our wonderful country will have a prosperity that will enrich EVERYONE.

And this is the same group that was screaming because ExxonMobil was making too much money off of the high cost of oil! Why wasn't this past summer hailed as a significant step toward less fuel consumption?
You can't tax your way to prosperity. Why does Friedman, Obama, and the rest want to social engineer through taxes? You want to cut oil consumption, reduce the size of government.

Hey there Freidman, why don't YOU put Your money where your mouth is. Everytime you receive a paycheck, endorse it, send it to the Whitehouse with a note saying that this is your contribution to the Federal Deficit.
Tell them your plan, tell them you want the Federal Government to be more fically responsible, tell them you want the Federal Government to build and manage Nuclear Power Plants using your $$.
Follow your money, see where it goes, go ahead. Hey, YOU TRUST them don't you?
Perhaps you should start writing articles concerning....Oh I don't know.....fashion?

Mr. Friedman is absolutely correct:
We are our own Benedict Arnolds shipping needlessly billions and over the years trillions of dollars to nations that do not reflect our values--and even fund our enemies.

Raise the fuel tax but use the money to build a mass transit system based on rails. Railroads can transport a person several hundred miles on each gallon used.

"Inorginate use of oil"???? We use that oil for more than vacations, etc. We have the highest production of food and products in the world. We have more oil reserves that are being blocked from extraction by the "wacko" enviros and their lib/dem/lefty buddies in congress than the rest of the world combined. We could be the biggest exporter of oil, but nooooo, the lib/dem/lefty political hacks so hate what we stand for that they willingly work against the best interests of the US. Interesting that they don't object to the money pledged by O to foreign countries for their off-shore drillings projects (companies owned by George Soros, a major donor to the dem party). Conflict of interest? 14 months

Wow this might work if every city in America was designed to be able to walk to work. Last summer when Gas hit a high of $4 a gallon -- if I had still worked 45 minutes away from where I lived - then I wouldn't have been able to work because I couldn't afford to get to work. What a schmuck. This again continues to show how out of touch people are with the real america.
