Closing Bell: A great day that may feel empty (AA, PEP, VG, LEN, RPRX, PLUG, MMM, WFC)

More

Today was one of those up-days that might be a disappointment to many bulls because the gap-ups were not met by follow-on buying throughout the day. A better weekly joblessness report may have been muted by Asian central banks intervening to protect the US Dollar.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,786.79 +61.21 (0.63%)
S&P 500 1,065.31 +7.73 (0.73%)
Nasdaq 2,124.41 +14.08 (0.67%)

Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) posted a surprise positive earnings report after the close yesterday rather than a loss expected. Shares still were up over 2% at $14.50 late in the day, but this may be viewed as a disappointment after shares were above $15.00 earlier this morning and last night.

PepsiCo, Inc.
(NYSE: PEP) managed to beat earnings expectations, but revenues were soft. The company also warned that consumer thrift was likely to remain for some time. Shares were down 1.5% at $60.25 ahead of the closing bell.

Vonage Holdings Corporation (NYSE: VG) spent all day giving back some serious gains, although just on profit taking as there was no negative news today. Vonage shares were down 13% at $1.74 ahead of the closing bell.

Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN) was one of the better performing homebuilders today. Despite reports of more broad listing price cuts, there is some talk that Congress may extend its housing tax credit program. Shares were up over 10% at $14.55 ahead of the closing bell.

Repros Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: RPRX) pulled a fast one today by announcing a capital raise after its shares effectively doubled yesterday. This one was down 23% at $1.42 ahead of the closing bell.

Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) saw a huge move on a press release that 3M Co. (NYSE: 3M) and Plug Power entered into an exclusive commercial supply agreement for 3M membrane electrode assemblies. Shares were up 20% at $1.11 before the closing bell.

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) was one of the losing banks today after UBS issued a SELL rating on the stock. Shares were down over 0.5% at $29.09 a few minutes ahead of the closing bell.
