Closing Bell: The quiet bullish day (AMSC, AMAT, SVNT, SRZ)

More

All in all, this was a fairly quiet day. The markets started out soft but managed to hold up most of the day. A CEO confidence reading may have helped somewhat.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,858.36 +71.49 (0.73%)
S&P 500 1,071.06 +5.58 (0.52%)
Nasdaq 2,138.23 +14.30 (0.67%)

American Superconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: AMSC) traded higher all day on takeover rumors. Shares were up almost 5% at $32.90 late in the day on this one.

Applied Materials Inc.
(NASDAQ: AMAT) rose today based partly on strong call option buying. We have heard rumors of a key upgrade coming from an analyst, but that is conjecture only. Shares were up 1.1% at $13.23 late in the trading day.

Savient Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: SVNT) was a winner today despite having priced a 4.3 million share secondary offering of common stock at $13.29. An Oppenheimer upgrade helped out here. Shares were up 6.7% at $14.18 ahead of the closing bell.

Sunrise Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: SRZ) was one of the biggest winners of all on a huge $204 million worth of properties sale. Shares were up over 50% at $5.07 ahead of the closing bell.
