Madoff: Chillin' with mobsters and spies

More

Bernie Madoff is getting used to his new neighbors. Gone are the days of Montauk and Manhattan, and he isn't sharing his space with topless dancers.

Now, he says goodnight to a drug pusher, chills with a former mobster, and hangs with a convicted spy ... and these guys are probably saying, "I hang around with Bernie Madoff." The former financier Ponzi schemer spends his evenings walking laps around the prison track at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex, not far from Raleigh, N.C.

These details were revealed in court filings from a legal complaint filed by Joseph Cotchett, an attorney who represents around a dozen Madoff victims. He's working on a civil case against Madoff and several of his associates and other financial institutions, claiming that they were involved in Madoff's fraud. The man in the can, however, continues to insist that he acted alone.

Madoff's new buds include Carmine Perisco, who is said to be a boss in the Colombo crime family, and Jonathan Pollard, who was convicted of selling military secrets to Israel more than 20 years ago. The FBI and Madoff's attorney, Ira Sorkin, wouldn't comment for The Associated Press.

The civil suit alleges, based on an unspecified source, Madoff brought drugs into the office from 1975 to 2003, virtually flooding the office with cocaine to the point where some called it "the North Pole." Topless waitresses were on hand, and affairs between employees were not unusual. Hell, Madoff even held onto a list of his favorite masseuses, who would rub him down in exchange for his investors' cash.

Madoff, now 71, is serving a 150-year sentence. So, why bring up old stuff, right?
