Closing Bell: Earnings working against stocks (BCRX, DELL, DHI, INTC, LEAP, PCS)

More

Today was a very unusual day. There was no real economic data to absorb. And the markets did see some unusual options trading ahead of expiration date at 4:00 PM today. Disappointing earnings kept a negative bias in the air despite a brief recovery into positive territory in the final hour today... Yet the negative close seemed almost a certain fate today.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,318.16 -14.28 (-0.14%)
S&P 500 1,091.37 -3.53 (-0.32%)
Nasdaq 2,146.04 -10.78 (-0.50%)

Unusual Options Trading

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, (BCRX) was down all day on a secondary offering. Shares were down 7.5% at $9.62 late in the session, but that was better than the lows seen today.

Dell (DELL) might want to consider changing its name to Doghouse. It really hurt its own stock chart after a very disappointing earnings report last night. Shares were down 9.5% at $14.36 late in the day. It will be hard for Dell to recover rapidly regardless of what it announces between now and year-end.

DR Horton (DHI) was just ugly. A 'narrower loss' amounted to $232 million. A gain in orders translated to far lower house prices as only the low end is selling. Shares were down 15% at $10.38 late in the day.

Intel Corporation (INTC) was clipped lower again despite an upgrade this morning as yesterday's big BofA Merrill Lynch downgrade continues to weigh on investors. Shares were down 0.35% at $19.23 late in the trading day.

Leap Wireless (LEAP) was one of the key unusual options activity stocks out there today with shares up over 10% on re-rumors that it may have a tie up with Metro PCS (PCS).
