Everybody's back at their desks today, but a majority will be skirting as much work as possible and doing a little stealth shopping when the boss isn't looking. I know that I was deluged with myriad emails from various retailers extolling the virtues of their own "Cyber Monday" sales. Cyber Monday is the day that you can get free shipping, amazing percentages off, or extra goodies simply for shopping from the comfort of your computer. Remember, many analysts believe that Cyber Monday is nothing more than hype and not a real phenomenon (see Colin Sebastian's comments in the seventh paragraph). That said, which retailers could cash in today?
I'm going to stick to my guns here and assert that this is going to be a decent holiday shopping season for discount retailers like Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT). I just feel that these retailers are going to have a good shopping season because of the perceived value that shoppers are receiving:
- WMT has started a campaign promising that it shop other companies' sales to make sure that you are getting the absolute best price on your Christmas goodies -- you can shop knowing that you have found the best price.
- Of course, TGT is testing price matching in some markets, trying to insure that its customers are getting the best prices.
Do a little searching, there are plenty of Internet sites out there that can help you find free shipping codes, free little extras, or great sales. Just be careful, there will be scammers out there trying to dupe people with phishing emails and fake sites. Perhaps it will be the identity thieves that have the best Cyber Monday.
