Upper Deck and Nike stand behind Tiger Woods

With companies like Accenture (ACN) and Procter & Gamble (PG) cutting, or at least weakening, their ties with embattled ladies' man Tiger Woods, it's interesting to look at who is standing by him: Upper Deck, a leading producer of sports cards and other memorabilia, has opted to stand by him.

"Upper Deck will maintain its exclusive agreement with Tiger in both our sports cards and memorabilia categories, and we look forward to his eventual return to the PGA Tour," Upper Deck Chief Executive Richard McWilliam said in a statement. "Tiger and his family have our full support."

According to The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), "Since 2001, Mr. Woods has been an official spokesman for Upper Deck, which has an exclusive licensing agreement with him and has produced a series of Tiger Woods trading cards and autographed collectibles." Woods also participates in contests and promotional events for the company.

Also standing by Tiger Woods is the company that has been his most iconic sponsor: Nike (NKE) chairman and co-founder Phil Knight told Sports Business Journal that "When his career is over, you'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now."

A clear pattern is emerging: Companies that are directly tied to the golf industry will stand by Woods, because he has such a direct impact on their sales -- people buy Nike products because of Tiger Woods, and there's no other golfer who comes close to bringing that kind of exposure. But companies that use Woods as part of broader brand-building initiatives will dump him and look elsewhere.
