AMA Endorses Senate Health Care Reform Bill

As Senate Democrats prepared Tuesday for the third and final key vote in the Senate on health care reform legislation, the bill received the support of a powerful interest group -- the American Medical Association (AMA).

The AMA, arguably one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington -- certainly one of the most respected -- has announced its support for the latest version of the bill, The Associated Press reported Monday. However, the AMA is still seeking a separate Senate action to repeal the existing Medicare payment formula for doctors, in order to prevent periodic reimbursement cuts.
"All Americans deserve affordable, high-quality health coverage so they can get the medical care they need – and this bill advances many of our priority issues for achieving the vision of a health system that works for patients and physicians," AMA President-elect Cecil B. Wilson said, The Boston Globe reported Monday.

Assuming Senate Republicans continue with parliamentary tactics primarily designed to delay the vote on the health care reform bill for as long as possible, Senate Democrats hope to vote and pass the bill on Thursday December 24, Christmas Eve.

Political/Economic Analysis: Without question, the AMA's backing is a pivotal factor in the bill's prospects. The Obama administration prudently made the AMA a key advisor in the bill's formulation process: it's hard to envision a health care reform bill this wide in scope becoming law without the group's backing.
