The murky waters of the social media space just got a little clearer. An environment famous for having gray areas found boundaries in a Wisconsin courtroom Tuesday when a local teenager pleaded no contest to two felonies.
The student, Anthony R. Stancl of New Berlin, blackmailed more than 30 of his fellow students into committing sex acts by using photos and videos he pulled from their Facebook pages.
Stancl could get up to half a century in prison as a result of his current predicament. Originally, he faced 12 charges that could have landed him in the slammer for 300 years. The charges on which Stancl will be sentenced include repeated sexual assault of the same child and third-degree sexual assault. Prosecutors dismissed second-degree sexual assault, child enticement and possession of child pornography charges as a result of the deal.
State authorities accused Stancl of posing as a girl named Kayla and convincing his targets to send him nude photos, more than 300 of which were found on his computer.
This sort of situation has always been viewed as a threat to the social networking space, as it consists of profound risks that can only be mitigated through means that don't deliver substantial results. Effective prosecution and a stiff sentence have shown that the government will do its part to keep the social media space as clear as possible, which should protect revenue streams and should help keep legal costs contained in the future.
The sentencing date may be determined at a status hearing set for Jan. 7, 2010.

Throw out the notion of "child porn" here. He wasn't looking at five year olds. These were biologically adult people. Much of the materials he had were posted by the teenagers themselves. If he can be charged with possession of child porn, every one of the victims in this case can also be charged with manufacturing, distributing, and with possessing child porn as well.
See where your Uncle Sammy is going with this? He wants to put your 17 year old in prison for sending pictures of her boobs or other private areas over the internet. It will of course be for her protection.
The next step is to start charging teens with statutory rape, for having consensual sexual encounters, resulting in intercourse or not. (They have done so in my state)The logic of LEP is that teens can't consent to sex, so both parties are rapists. Remember when you engaged in petting as a teen? Now it's a felony.
Of course they'll be tried as adults. Ironies abound.
That said, this guy is a sociopath and needs to be kept away from the rest of us, until such time he no longer poses a threat. I'm guessing he's one of those guys with a strong potential to move on to bigger things.
