Facebook was busy on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, according to Hitwise, but people weren't playing online games. It seems they were more focused on staying in touch and spreading the usual holiday cheer than tending to their farms, cafes and organized crime battles. Over the holidays, Facebook was the top Website visited in the U.S., Hitwise reported via its Twitter account. The Web metrics company tweeted the bold statement: "Facebook was the most visited site in the US on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 1st time the site has been the #1 visited US site ever."
This isn't the first time Facebook has shown a major traffic surge around Christmas. In 2008, according to the blog Inside Facebook, the popular social networking site saw traffic spike -- but on a much smaller user base. A year ago, Facebook had "only" 150 million users, with 42 million of them active and in the U.S. This time around, it boasts 350 million total users, with 100 million of them both domestic and active members.
While activity was up, social games and other Facebook applications didn't get as much attention -- in fact, their use actually declined on Christmas this year. With families getting together and friends catching up, photo albums, status updates and walls were managed, engaging those who weren't able to connect physically over the holiday.
