For a company that hasn't even admitted to a new product, expectations are awfully high. The word is out that Apple (AAPL) will be unveiling a tablet computer at a major product launch this month.
Former Google (GOOG) exec Lee Kai-fu put out on his blog that he knows its coming, citing an anonymous source, and that the device would sell for less than $1,000. It's going to have a 10.1-inch screen and three-dimensional graphics, he continued, according to a Bloomberg News report, saying it would look like a large iPhone.
According to Lee, Apple believes it can move 10 million of the devices in 2010, again drawing on sources he isn't naming. Lee's new company, Innovation Works, is a Beijing-based technology fund that counts Foxconn Technology Group among its investors. Foxconn is the biggest electronics manufacturers in the world is a supplier to Apple for the iPhone. But, Lee claims he didn't get his information from anyone at Foxconn.
The device has the potential to bring in revenue from several new sources, as it would be competing with a wide range of devices. In addition to squeezing some market share out of netbook manufacturers such as Acer (ACEIF) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), it could function as an e-reader, which would create a new competitive challenge for the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle.
But, that's if it really exists, right?
