The USA Today's DriveOn blog considers the possibility of what would appear to be the mother of all conspiracies: "Are the Obama administration and Rust Belt members of Congress taking political advantage of Toyota to bolster the fortunes of Detroit automakers?"The blog post continues:
The unprecedented move to keep Toyota from selling models under recall could ve (sic) viewed as economic punishment, rather than consumer protection. Neither LaHood nor Toyota think that owners of cars covered by the recall should stop driving them. The cars may be too potentially dangerous to be sold, but they are fine to drive as long as you're aware of telltale warning signs that they may try to roar off on their own. Imagine a drug recall where the government stops sales in stores, but doesn't tell people to throw away the bottles in their medicine cabinets.
Like any good conspiracy, this one is impossible to prove or disprove.
But it is fair to note that the U.S. government is the majority shareholder in two auto companies, and is charged with regulating all auto companies -- and a successful turnaround of the U.S. auto industry that leads to minimal losses for taxpayers is an important political goal, not just a business one.
Is that evidence of a conspiracy? No, not really. But it's definitely fuel for anyone looking to create one.

It is definitely a very strong motive. This also illustrates the huge conflict of interest that the current administration has created by nationalizing GM.

After the Japanese brought to us an event now remembered as Pearl Harbor they dragged the US into WW2 which we ended by nuking Japan into submission. Fortunately the US had a huge domestic auto manufacturing infrastructure. We were able to rapidly retool these factories and build the necessary machines of war. It seems by the tone of your article that you would prefer that future US tanks be built in China. Not sure how well that will work as it will be China we are fighting.
Japan then turned the tables on the US by eroding our manufacturing base with cheap labor. It is now cheaper for Japan to build cars in the US as compared to domestically in Japan or even Mexico for that matter.
Japan has rapidly lost their manufacturing to China,Taiwan etc.
It is time for the US to return to being the manufacturing powerhouse it once was.
99% of foreign imports must end. I despise Obama, he's an idiot, but if he were to remove all Toyotas Hondas Mitsu's Kias Hyundais etc etc from our shores I would actually consider voting for him in 2012
Eliminating our reliance on Asian manufacturing by switcing to all US manufacturing would eliminate all unemployment. There is a $22 Billion per month deficit with China alone - this equates to 6.6 MILLION $40,000.00 per year US jobs - just by eliminating Chinese imports for domestic production.
In my eyes ANYONE who willingly drives a vehicle of foreign marque or manufacture is guilty of treason against the US and should be hung by the neck until dead!!!!!
Damn strait I'm a patriot. Are you ?
All countries in fact must be agriculturally, industrially and financially independant otherwise you end up with things like global recessions and 11% unemployment

The dudes OK with me. Your post may be charged but you bring up very good points. I very much liked your post. America must create more manufacturing jobs in order to come out of this ahead.
I do not believe Obama is an idiot, I think he has a very heavy load and an even more hostile environment in which to work. He does want to create more manufacturing jobs just not making Nike's and everything plastic. I for one do not believe america needs more factories pumping out more inefficient cars and trucks in the form of a bigger auto industry. I could only imagine how Detroit would act if it had an even greater influence on our country. Obama know's this and that's why he wants to create manufacturing in clean energy such as solar panals, electric engines systems, battery technology. There are many other programs.
The problem is not enough money being put into these plans. The lack of incentive to the business owner and the lack of research money to develop these technology's is what is holding us back. China must apply Standards and Practices in its markets or we must increase regulation on our trade with them, and actually enforce these regulations.

i buy jap cars because ... ford as well as gm continually disregards the american people and abuses our trust - to them we're simply filth and our opinions aren't worth a shit ..... we're merely fodder.
ford and gm simply haven't listened ... if jap car goes we'll ALL BE ON A LEASH SOLEY TO SERVE FORD AND GM'S INTERESTS
issues concern
- fuel efficient cars
- cars that constantly need repairing , and this in turn results in harrassment from interaction with automechanics
- going overseas to hire foreign workers , abandoning the needs of people who's lives and families depend on gm and ford factories
- abusing trust - all of you need to rent " flash of genius "

a large segment of the american econmy depends on jap cars and products , especially the raw material sector .....
FACE YOUR MASTER , tell your master to keep jobs here , lest he eventually spay you. you worthless rabid filth.

I think you forgot that Ford, GM, and Chrysler have closed their plants to take them to foreign countries. If the goverment take Asian car manufacturer out, it does not mean that the Big Three will bring their plants back.
I am a patriot, but I am realistic. Ford has been killing people since the '70. Furthermore, Ford gave a price to human life (cost-benifit analysis), so for Ford is better to pay a law suit for one of your family member death than fix a car before they sell it. If you are a true patriot take your Toshiba laptop, your Sony TV, and your JVC stereo system out of your house.
If we are talking about patriots, Toyota build more cars in the U.S. than the Big Three together. For those patriots that drive a Pontiac Vibe, bad news, it is a Toyota. The only part that is not Toyota in the Pontiac Vibe is the Pontiac emblem.

I have a Toyota Tundra - its the best damn car I have ever owned and wouldnt trade it for a GM with a cash bonus!!
If I am not mistaken, GM, FORD, (Chrystler is out because it is now foreign owned am I correct?)...these are publicly traded companies folks!!! ANYBODY, foreign or domestic, can purchase STOCK in these companies!!! Get off your soap box about supporting America by supporting companies that ONCE WERE by America and for America. It's no longer the case. We ARE in a GLOBAL MARKETPLACE and I'll be damned if I am going to spend my hard-earned dollars on a sub-par piece of crap just so I can say I am supporting America!! BOGUS!!! My Toyota was built in San Antonio Texas and I am proud to have purchased such a well-built truck made by my fellow American blue-collar workers. And truthfully, the reason TOYOTA can successfully manufacture right here on American soil so cost-effectively is because they are not strangle-hold by the United Autoworkers Union!! THAT is the problem with American Manufacturing and until Americans can deal with the fact that a 2,500 SF house is "necessary" and start to purchase realistic needs, we are going to continue to price ourselves out of the Global Economy.
