Increased Job Openings Shed Light On Unemployment

Unemployment has been a major concern for Americans over the past couple of years, but we get a bit of good news that job openings rose by 7.6% in January, compared with December.

Indicating that employers are at least starting to hire again, new job openings rose to 2.7 million. This is the highest level since back in February 2009.

The good news, is that there are jobs out there. The bad news, is that there are still just not enough. With unemployment still running at about 9.7% in the country, there are 5.5 people for each job opening. That's is some pretty tough competition.

All told, since the start of the recession, the economy has shed 8.4 million jobs, so it will take a long time before those jobs can be replaced.

The best way to judge the current employment landscape is to look at employment ads and see how many jobs there are out there. According to online job finder monster.com, ads for job openings rose by 2% year over year in February. This marks the first month that the company has had year over year growth in postings since December 2007.

Another major online job site indeed.com confirms what monster had to say, and stated that it has seen a "sharp turnaround in the job market" over the past several months.
