The sheet has just been lifted off the new Ford Taurus Police Interceptor from Ford Motor Co. (F). Suffice it to say that this car is not your sheriff's Crown Victoria.
A leading edge report from The Mustang News reveals that the new Police Interceptor seeks to squelch the giggles that arose late last year when patrol cruiser enthusiasts learned that Ford would be building it's next interceptor on a revived Taurus platform. It appears that Ford put some significant thought behind this effort.
The article describes a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor that appears to be the result of successful dual-phase engineering. First phase engineering involved a number of significant operational enhancements that adorn the Taurus platform. These enhancements include radar-based monitoring that alerts drivers of cross traffic and a rear view camera system, as well as other new safety options.
Then it appears that Ford undertook a second concentrated engineering phase, which was focused specifically on the needs of street-level law enforcement. The new Police Interceptor offers two choices of engine, the larger of which includes an all wheel drive-train. The cruiser's interior has been 90% reworked for police duty. Additionally, the Police Interceptor boasts a fuel tank that is situated beneath the rear seat, which puts to rest some past trouble with the rear-mounted tank in the old Crown Victoria.
When given the overall satisfactory performance of Ford Motor Company over the past few quarters, one could safely assume that the company's efforts on the new Ford Taurus Police Interceptor will also return at least satisfactory results. Based on what I'm seeing, I think that will be the case.
