Do crowds really have any wisdom? Well, we're working without confirmation, but members of the AAPL Sanity Board forum, which isn't open to the public, puts the first-day tally for Apple's (AAPL) iPad at 120,000. The group used the order numbers from their own Apple Store purchases and extrapolated based on time stamps and serial numbers. The data was from 48 orders for 54 of the devices.
Philip Elmer-DeWitt, who has spent decades covering Apple, says the estimate by the enthusiasts is consistent with his gut instincts. He also notes that two-thirds of the orders for the long-awaited (though somewhat disappointing) tablet device were for basic wi-fi, with only a third taking the 3G wireless capability.
Though the device failed to wow gadget freaks when it was announced, Apple is limiting advanced orders to two per person. Maybe this engineered exclusivity will pump up sales a bit more. Yet, of the 48 orders from the AAPL Sanity Board forum, only six were for two devices. Among them, however, is one member who, according to DeWitt, "said she was planning to buy nine."
I bet Steve Jobs is hoping she has a lot of like-minded friends.
