This summer, Apple Inc. (AAPL)'s iPhone and iPad are going to have a feature that iPhone users have been dying to see since the phone hit the market in 2007... the ability to multitask. The iPhone took the world by storm when it was released, and each time Apple releases a new model of the popular smart phone consumers line up and wait for hours, and in some cases days, to get their hands on the new Apple iPhone. While the phone is one of the most popular phones on the market today, there are a couple of issues with them, and the inability to multitask ranks up at the top of list of features that iPhone users have wanted.
Well, Apple listened, and this summer the iPhone and newly released iPad devices will start to be able to multitask.
I own an iPhone, and I must admit that one of the most annoying things about the phone is that if I am listening to streaming radio through my phone and I decide that I want to check my mail, or look for something online, I have to shut down my radio before I can go back to the home screen and open up my email or internet.
I should point out that if you are listening to music through the iPod application on the phone you can continue to listen while you use another application, but for any application that you have downloaded to your phone, you are currently only allowed to have one running at a time.
According to Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, "We weren't the first to this party, but we're going to be the best."
Jobs went on to say that users will be able to bounce around all the various applications on their iPhones with "tremendous fluidity."
While iPhone users will definitely be looking forward to the update, it is the iPad that should really take advantage of the new multitasking ability. The iPad launch has been successful, but there are a lot of people out there (myself included) that have not bought one yet simply because of its lack of multitasking. The news should bring a lot more customers into Apple stores to check out the new iPad.
Apple has sold over 450,000 iPads since its launch on Saturday.
Unfortunately, not all iPhone users will be able to take advantage of the upcoming updates. The multitasking will not be available on the original iPhones, or the iPhone 3G... just for the newest model, the iPhone 3GS.
What feature/improvement would you most like to see made available for the iPhone and iPad? If you have picked up a new iPad be sure to leave us a review of the new device and what you like/dislike about the new iPad.
