Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT) continues banking on its international operations. The company's largest Latin American operation -- Wal-Mart de Mexico SA -- just saw its first-quarter profit increase 19% from the year-ago quarter due to 20 new stores and increased sales. The exact profit: $336 million. The exact revenue: $5.9 billion.
Wal-Mart de Mexico became Mexico's largest retailer with its acquisition of Wal-Mart Central America at the conclusion of 2009. Not only did this add 519 stores to the company's bottom line, but it solidified Wal-Mart de Mexico's position as the largest retailer in Mexico to go alongside with Wal-Mart's position as the largest retailer in the U.S. Overall, Wal-Mart is the largest retailer -- by far -- in the world.
A surprise to many: Wal-Mart de Mexico's operating income in the Q1 period grew faster than sales. There were no details on the strategy the company used to get there. Wal-Mart's growing presence in Central America makes up for several large-profile failures in recent years in
South Korea and Germany. Add Wal-Mart's growing success to its increasing efforts in China and India, and the company's international presence won't just be a presence much longer. It will be domination.

Having shopped Walmart for many years I can tell you its making money because it sells inferior products. Whatever does come out right in the factory they sell cheaply to Walmart. I now am very slective in what I buy there.
Mostly items other than food, their foods by and large are not of very good quality.

Rony your obviously an idiot. How are there foods not very good quality. The brand name foods are made the same for Walmart as they are made for any other retailer. Most of Walmarts Great Value Store brand is made by the same brand name companies. This is not some new practice that they came up with. All store brands are made by a national brand company. This is how companies supplement their sales by offering a lower quality product for a cheaper price under a different label. This however does not make the product unsafe or bad. You get what you pay for. As far as there inferior products, yes there may be some that are of bad quality but go to any mass merchandiser and tell me they have no inferior made products. Well save time you cant. But most products that are brand name are made the exact way they are made for any other retailer. Wake up people lay off Walmart, they are not perfect but neither is any other retailer.
