Blame the Greeks... Why should today be any different? The fear is that the Greek debt crisis is ready to spread. You have heard it before, and you will continue to hear it again. Maybe this is just the excuse the bears needed to take control. Suddenly, the VIX was back above 25 for the first time since February. Here were today's closing bell levels:
Dow 10,926.77 -225.06 (-2.02%)
S&P 500 1,173.60 -28.66 (-2.38%)
Nasdaq 2,424.25 -74.49 (-2.98%)
Top Analyst Calls
BP plc (ADR) (BP) was up most of the day despite a weak tape as traders and investors tried to get past the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Shares were up 1.5% at $50.94 right before the closing bell.
AnnTaylor Stores Corp. (ANN) wa sup big today as the recovery is still going and after it said it would exceed consensus estimates. Shares were up 9.3% at $24.75 shortly before the closing bell.
National Bank of Greece (NBG) is showing that it too is a pig just like everything else in the PIIGS. KBW downgraded the stock, in a rather late call, and shares were down over 11% at $2.81 shortly before the closing bell.
Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS) was down again, but barely, after spending much of the day in positive territory. This was on the heels of class action lawsuits being filed. In the last minutes of trading, shares were only down 0.2% at $149.27.
Continental Airlines, Inc. (CAL) and UAL Corporation (UAUA) both played giveback, partly mirroring this merger survey... Both shares were down over 10% right before the closing bell.
Apple, Inc. (AAPL) spent another day in the doghouse after Steve Jobs got Gizmodo criminally charged after an Apple employee left a next-generation iPhone in a bar that was later sold to Gizmodo. Many posts online are starting to give the impression that Steve Jobs is no longer Mr. Cool. Shares were down 2.9% at $258.70 right before the close.
