Papa John's Wins Customer Satisfaction Poll - Really?

In the battle for pizza-chain dominance, it was Papa John's International (PZZA) that took the cake (or rather the crust). The Consumerist reports that the latest results from the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index -- tracking points on customer expectations, perceived quality and value, customer complaints, and customer loyalty -- show Papa John's topped its peers in both the pizza business and the fast-food sector overall.

The chain improved its score by 6.7% from last year, hitting 80/100.

Papa John's? Really? With the pasty crust, the too-sweet marinara, and the oil-laden "garlic sauce"? Interesting. It's also interesting that this rating came the same year that Domino's Pizza Inc. (DPZ) issued a mea culpa and a promise to deliver better-tasting pies. DPZ, incidentally, came in sixth on the list, with a score of 77 out of 100. Pizza Hut split the difference, ranking fourth with a score of 78.

I was distraught to see that my all-time dependable favorite, Taco Bell -- part of Yum! Brands (YUM) -- ranked 8th, scoring just 74. Bottom of the barrel? McDonald's (MCD). The undisputed king of fast-food nation brought up the rear with a rank of just 67. The house that Ronald built dropped 4.3% from last year. Notably absent from the list of so-called "limited service restaurants"? Arby's, Subway, Jack in the Box, and Steak 'n Shake, so who knows where they might have ranked.
