Although the new LED technology from GE may be expensive for now, the company could be, once more, changing how the world looks at light bulbs.

According to GE, this new LED technology produces a quality of light similar to that of the old incandescent light bulbs, but which is so efficient it has been awarded Energy Star designation. No other similar LED light bulb has yet accomplished that. Better yet, the new GE LED bulbs contain none of the harmful lead which makes today's compact florescent light bulbs rather undesirable.

Continue reading General Electric Brings Another Bright Idea

General Electric Brings Another Bright Idea originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 15:40:00 EST. News reports are indicating that Chase has purchased up to 50% of all the London Metals Exchange warehoused copper. It is interesting, yes, but what does this mean when viewing the big picture?

It would seem that the intrinsic wisdom of "physically holding" commodity metals is finally being realized. Copper, for all its earthy commonality and utility, holds great sway over the economies of the world. Copper is a near universal necessity in the movement of electricity, water, and a host of pressurized gasses. Without immediately available copper, life as we know it would most probably come to a sudden, screeching halt.
Continue reading Copper Gains Glamour as Hedge

Copper Gains Glamour as Hedge originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. One thing is for certain though, manufacturers such as Apple, Inc. (AAPL) and retailers including Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT) are taking the concept ever more seriously with the hope that it shall return more than just the echo of an already trite catch phrase.

What has become obvious to me though is that the idea of Cyber Monday has given way to a virtual cyber week, or perhaps a cyber month, or perhaps more accurately, a cyber shopping lifestyle. People who shop on line are going to shop on line. We know it's smart. We really don't need a declared virtual event to motivate us.
Continue reading Cyber Monday Numbers in Question

Cyber Monday Numbers in Question originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. (LLY), the broader picture for the company looks flat. Having dropped from an average share price in the $53 range over two years ago, to a current average share value hovering near $35, investors are signaling that the long range forecast for Lilly is unexciting at best.

It appears that Lilly shall be buoyed in the near term by the recent FDA approval of testosterone replacement therapy Axiron for sale in the U.S. Lilly purchased rights to Axiron from Australian firm, Acrux for an initial payment of $50 million plus $3 million based on the transfer of manufacturing assets.

Continue reading Eli Lilly Likely to Remain Limp

Eli Lilly Likely to Remain Limp originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 15:40:00 EST. Current upbeat news from regional food producers is signaling good news for many companies, including Deere & Company (DE). While developing industrial bases such as China and India have taken on the lion's share of mid to heavy manufacturing duties, they are also developing increased needs to feed hungry work forces. Indeed, they are also developing the capital to feed those needs.

The spin-off from this morphing consumption dynamic is a surge of growth in America's agricultural and food production sectors. Indications are that the increased demands being put upon American agricultural output is fueling an increased demand for heavy weight farm tractors and is requiring food processing facility expansions. "Sales of 100-horsepower tractors, which cost about $75,000 to $100,000 each, were up 27 percent last month over the same month last year, said Charlie O'Brien, vice president of agricultural services for The Association of Equipment Manufacturers, in an Associated Press interview.

Continue reading Manufacturing Bright Spot Found in Food Production

Manufacturing Bright Spot Found in Food Production originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. The stock has risen in the range of 5%, with shares trading at a healthy $62.34 as of this writing. The company reported a 5.7 percent increase in third-quarter adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization, via its 8:30 am conference call today. However, investors might wish to think carefully before loading up on too many shares of this stock.
Continue reading Time Warner Cable: A Cautionary Tale

Time Warner Cable: A Cautionary Tale originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST. A recent tax bill in the amount of $269 million, sent by the state of Texas to Amazon (AMZN) stands as testament to that looming ugliness.

Amazon claims that because technically its distribution activities are headquartered in Kentucky rather than Texas, it owes no retail sales tax to the armadillo state. So, the gauntlet has been thrown down and the challenge accepted.
The earnings call is scheduled for just after today's close, with company guidance suggesting a result of 37 cents per share on revenue of $2.18 billion. Those numbers are slightly off previous year Q3 results of 38 cents per share on revenue of $2.24 billion.

My question is, will eBay still be a buy after the coming earnings release? The EPA has just given its approval for a 5% increase in the amount of ethanol allowable in today's motor fuels. While the petroleum industry has not yet given indication whether or not it shall make the new fuel blend available to consumers, various business sectors and government entities are quickly aligning themselves either pro or con on the issue. One thing is almost certain, corn futures just became more volatile.

The auto industry is largely against the increase in ethanol concentrations, citing the fact that a 15% ethanol mixture cannot be safely and efficiently burned in vehicles manufactured before 2007. Consumers who mistakenly pumped E15 gasoline into those older vehicles would run the risk of damaging their car engines and defeating the emission equipment and mileage standards of their vehicles.

Continue reading Corn Futures Could Spike Food Prices

Corn Futures Could Spike Food Prices originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 16:40:00 EST. They're not bullish by an extremely wide margin, but they are optimistic nonetheless.
Pending regulatory approval, GE has penned a deal to acquire Dresser Inc. for $3 billion, thus expanding its reach and capabilities in the realm of natural gas extraction and usage. Dresser's products include technology for gas engines, control and relief valves, measurement, regulation and control systems for gas and fuel distribution.
(MCD). Investors however, appear to be rallying behind the perennial favorite, with shares of McDonald's trading up almost 1.25% as of this writing.

The issue stems from health concerns that are being voiced by local governments in California and possibly elsewhere. The assertion is that McDonald's Happy Meals, which are marketed towards children by the use of free toy giveaways, contain unacceptably high levels of sugars, sodium, and fats. Local politicians are forwarding the proposition that they shall ban McDonald's use of toys as a marketing tool if the company doesn't change the Happy Meal offering.
Continue reading McDonald's Happy Meals Might Become Less Happy

McDonald's Happy Meals Might Become Less Happy originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 05 Oct 2010 15:30:00 EST. The company has cut its earnings forecast by more than 50% and is speaking in terms that signal wishful thinking more than corporate direction. As of this writing, Nintendo shares have lost over 8.5% on the day.

What bothers me here is not the market's reaction to the company's guidance, as much as the appearance that Nintendo is suffering from an uncharacteristic lack of precise forward momentum.
It seems like a sure bet to me. As global manufacturing interests are attempting to excite production and governments are attempting to re-energize consumerism, warehouse supplies of copper have been declining.

Yet, this alone is not what piques my interest. Two other significant factors are converging with a reduced copper stockpile, creating what I see as an undeniable, medium-term investment opportunity.

Continue reading Why Go Long on Copper?

Why Go Long on Copper? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 12:00:00 EST.
The Chinese government has decided that American chicken is being sold too cheaply in China. To prevent American poultry producers from further chicken "dumping," the commerce ministry is imposing new tariffs -- in some cases exceeding 100% -- on the imported birds for a period of five years. It sounds unbelievable, right? Well, a recently initiated investigation involving GMAC indicates that may be exactly what has happened in tens of thousands of foreclosure cases across the country.

The investigation, undertaken by the Florida Attorney General, is examining three law firms for allegedly providing fraudulent affidavits that identify who holds the original mortgage note in foreclosure cases. According to a report from NPR, this action has caused GMAC to suspend pending eviction and foreclosure activities.

Continue reading GMAC Investigation Signals Possible Next Meltdown

GMAC Investigation Signals Possible Next Meltdown originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 14:30:00 EST.
