China's surprise rate hike came amid word of a rate by the European Central Bank, expected on Thursday of this week. Brent Crude hit what appears to be a two-year high and even Ben Bernanke's remarks on inflation didn't add much to the mix. That being said, it was not known until the final minute if the markets were going to be in the red or the black for the trading day.
Fed Treasury buying and anticipation of a Ben Bernanke speech kept the lid on Treasury yields as well. Chips remained weak today and some airline scares did not exactly serve as a great catalyst to drive all transports. What is often "Merger Monday" felt more like "Mixed Monday" today.
The Institute of Supply Management showed a slight drop for March, but investors were positive most of the day. Selling in the last 90 minutes of the day felt a bit surprising -- but that may be nothing more than pre-weekend profit taking.
Regardless of the ultimate close, the DJIA went between positive and negative multiple times today -- and it was not until the formal close that the exact level of red or black was known.

Warnings of inflation, corn crop reports, weekly jobless claims and upcoming elections in the Middle East and North Africa all acted to interrupt what had been a non-stop bull market. Oil was higher after Moammar Gadhafi pushed back rebels in key areas in Libya. One Federal Reserve governor's comments, on how higher rates are needed before the end of the year, acted to soften stocks right before the close.

Still, today marked the end of the quarter -- and it was the best first quarter in years (maybe since 1998).

Anything cautious for the markets is being discounted and valuation concerns are out the door. It seems the bulls are in charge -- regardless of what comes down the pipe in the Middle East, Japan, the PIIGS and elsewhere. Even a goal of only aiming to cut foreign energy dependence by one-third did not rattle markets. The TARP even made money. Maybe we can just convince Bernanke to go ahead and raise rates to get the pain over with, once and for all.
Housing prices continued south according to national housing survey data from Case Shiller. International stock markets saw a mixed bag on Tuesday, but U.S. investors continued to sit there, buying stocks. Maybe the real catalyst is the fact that very few companies have formally lowered guidance despite the turmoil.
A selloff late in the day erased the small gains, and markets closed in the red today.

Another weak housing figure did not manage to cause too much harm as -- by now -- investors are conditioned to expect poor housing data. Consumer spending and income rose in February, topping expectations. U.S. investors also continued to expect that oil infrastructure would keep growing based upon Middle East build-outs for expanded production.

Continue reading Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD)

Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. Portugal default fears grew and Japan saw what made for two years of price drops for its consumers. It was pretty impressive to see that most global markets rose on the day. Bond yields were higher and gold failed to reach yesterday's highs.
The Nasdaq and S&P 500 followed much the same pattern as a massive intervention by the G7 nations pushed the yen down by about 2.5% against the US dollar and the Fed freed some of the largest US banks either to resume or to increase dividend payments to shareholders.
The UN resolution authorizing a no-fly zone in Libya sent crude oil above $103/barrel before Libya announced that it would initiate a cease-fire, quelling some fears of a major military dust-up. In currency markets, the euro has traded above $1.41 for most of the day and the yen is trading just under 81. Gold prices rose again, by $12.40/ounce, to $1,416.40.
The number of continuing claims also fell by 80,000. The headline consumer inflation index rose 0.5%, as expected, while core inflation rose 0.2%, a bit more than the 0.1% that had been forecast. Prices for WTI crude oil rose above $100/barrel again, up more than $3/barrel on fears of more unrest in Bahrain, which is seen by many as a proxy struggle between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Japan rallied sharply and that was supposed to be giving a huge boost to stocks this morning. A downgrade of Portugal and an inflated wholesale inflation reading did not help matters. The reality is that headlines of statements from government officials from U.S. and Europe tended to move the markets more than fundamentals. Then the media sensationalism with urgency behind every single statement made for more directional changes than could be easily counted.
Even the FOMC keeping rates steady had very little impact. The markets were still in the red but today felt like a win when you consider where things were just 10 hours ago.
Japan led things south with news that the nuclear reactors were not shut down and could pose serious risks ahead. This sent Japan's NIKKEI 225 down more than 6% and back under the dreaded 10,000 mark. US markets held up better than expected, while news that Saudi troops were being asked to enter into protect Bahrain's infrastructure sent oil back up. US markets came back from larger losses late in the session.
An 8.9-magnitude quake in Japan battered Asian markets and Japan in particular. Retail sales came in up 1% rather than 1.2% but that was close enough considering the higher gas prices in the equation. Jobless claims rose again in the US, China's trade data was weak, headlines hit about demonstrators being fired upon in Saudi Arabia, and even lower oil prices failed to boost the mood. Treasury bond prices even rallied on a day when bond guru Bill Gross said he was effectively out of the Treasury buying now and on a day when we saw a record monthly government deficit, and gold was lower as the dollar rallied. Moody's also downgraded Spain yet again.
Still, the fear is what lies ahead tomorrow rather than what is happening today. PIMCO's Bill Gross has exited US Treasury bonds from the PIMCO Total Return Fund as well. The markets fought between being up and down on the two-year anniversary of the start of the end of the bear market.
