Then again, the reason was usually that the transaction had only a tangential strategic connection (like Skype). But, when there were clear synergies, the results have been particularly strong. Just look at PayPal.<br />
<br />
Well, it looks like eBay has learned this lesson. That is, the company's latest big deal is the <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110328006021/en/eBay-Acquire-GSI-Commerce">$2.4 billion acquisition</a> of GSI Commerce (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gsi-commerce-inc/gsic/nas">GSIC</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/ebay-strikes-a-2-4-billion-deal-for-gsi-commerce/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eBay Strikes a $2.4 Billion Deal for GSI Commerce</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/ebay-strikes-a-2-4-billion-deal-for-gsi-commerce/">eBay Strikes a $2.4 Billion Deal for GSI Commerce</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. After all, they have become a key part of our lives. And smartphones have the power to carry out secure and sophisticated transactions.</p>
<p>As is no surprise, many companies are scrambling to be winners in the e-wallet space. Take American Express (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/american-express-company/axp/nys">AXP</a>). The company has <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/story/american-express-launches-serve-digital-commerce-platform/2011-03-28">launched a new e-wallet</a> called Serve.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/american-express-e-wallet-serve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>American Express Revs Up Its E-wallet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/american-express-e-wallet-serve/">American Express Revs Up Its E-wallet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 11:30:00 EST. A variety of companies -- like NetSuite (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/netsuite-inc-common-stock/n/nys">N</a>) -- have built applications that are based on Internet technologies. The result is improved productivity and lower costs.</p>
<p>Yet, in order to continue to propel the cloud-computing revolution, there needs to be a strong technology foundation, such as with servers, operating systems and application development tools. And one of the top players in the market is Red Hat (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/red-hat-inc/rht/nys">RHT</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/25/red-hat-q4-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Red Hat Is Red Hot</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/25/red-hat-q4-earnings/">Red Hat Is Red Hot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. Unfortunately, the stock price has been miserable since the dot-com bust. All in all, it has remained in the low single digits. Then again, the company has had to deal with tough rivals, like Amazon.com (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas">AMZN</a>).</p>
<p>But Thursday, investors got a nice surprise. Walgreen (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/walgreen-co/wag/nys">WAG</a>) has <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/24/us-walgreen-drugstore-idUSTRE72N2ZW20110324">agreed to buy Drugstore.com</a> for $429 million. In early trading, DSCM was up a whopping 112% to $3.79.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/24/walgreens-buys-drugstore-com/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walgreens Strikes a $429 Million Deal for Drugstore.com</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/24/walgreens-buys-drugstore-com/">Walgreens Strikes a $429 Million Deal for Drugstore.com</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 13:30:00 EST. Just look at Cornerstone OnDemand (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/cornerstone-ondemand-inc/csod/nas">CSOD</a>), which develops human resources software. Last week, the company's public offering gained nearly 50% on its first day of trading.<br />

Although, one of the most anticipated IPOs is LinkedIn. In fact, through some of its SEC filings, it looks like the company is poised for a strong debut.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/22/prepping-for-an-ipo-linkedin-hits-100-million-users/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Prepping for an IPO, LinkedIn Hits 100 Million Users</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/22/prepping-for-an-ipo-linkedin-hits-100-million-users/">Prepping for an IPO, LinkedIn Hits 100 Million Users</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. In fact, the value of this photo site is now about $1.2 billion. </p>
<p>So why not pull off a big deal? Well, this week, Shutterfly agreed to pay <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/21/shutterfly-deal-idUSL3E7EL2YQ20110321">$333 million for Tiny Prints</a>. The transaction is a blend of stock and cash.</p>
<p>Founded in 2004, Tiny Prints operates two main websites: Tiny Prints and Wedding Paper Divas. They essentially provide personalized stationary, photo books and invitations. Moreover, the company has been effective in integrating with Facebook.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/22/shutterflys-333-million-deal-for-tiny-prints/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shutterfly's $333 Million Deal for Tiny Prints</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/22/shutterflys-333-million-deal-for-tiny-prints/">Shutterfly's $333 Million Deal for Tiny Prints</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 13:30:00 EST. Hey, perhaps at 80 years old, he is in his prime.</p>
<p>This week, Buffett is <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/marketbeat/2011/03/21/warren-buffett-in-south-korea-were-hunting-for-deals/">visiting South Korea</a>. Of course, he likes the growth prospects of the country and has the cash to pull off some deals there.</p>
<p>Interestingly enough, Buffett was planning on visiting Japan but he had to cancel the trip. Yet he did mention that the country is a great place to invest.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/21/buffett-goes-manda-crazy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buffett Goes M&amp;A Crazy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/21/buffett-goes-manda-crazy/">Buffett Goes M&amp;A Crazy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 16:40:00 EST. This is often magnified when there is a buyout, when there is usually a hefty premium.</p>
<p>Ironically enough, OptionsXpress (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/optionsxpress-holdings-inc/oxps/nas">OXPS</a>) would have been a nice options play today as the stock price is up about 15%. It struck one in the late 1980s and another in 2006. So far, the strategy has generated huge returns for investors. <br />
<br />
And yes, today HCA hit the public markets again. In all, the company raised $3.79 billion -- which makes it the biggest private equity IPO ever. The underwriters include Bank of America Merrill Lynch (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>), Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>) and JPMorgan Chase (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>).<br />

With cloud computing -- as well as the emergence of data-hungry applications -- the growth in the market has been strong.</p>
<p>To capitalize on this, some of the top companies are looking at IPOs. A report from the National Federation of Independent Business shows that <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-08/confidence-at-u-s-small-companies-climbs-to-highest-level-in-three-years.html">confidence is at a three-year high</a>. This technology came from a deal struck in 2005. Then, after lots of internal development, Google launched Android in 2007. Since then, the growth has been sizzling.</p>
<p>In fact, according to the most recent report from comScore, <a href="http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Android-Passes-RIM-Lengthens-Lead-on-iOS-ComScore-139951/">Android's market share</a> hit 31.2%. In fact, it may be more than just a rumor. In early trading Tuesday, the shares of Sprint were up nearly 6%.</p>
<p>In light of the need for spectrum investments, Deutsche Telekom has already said it's looking at strategic partnerships. So could this really be code-speak for a merger deal? <p>This is certainly the case with the James River Coal Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/james-river-coal-company/jrcc/nas">JRCC</a>). It has agreed to pay <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/07/jamesrivercoal-idUSL3E7E71GK20110307">$475 million for two coal companies</a>: International Resource Partners and Logan &amp; Kanawha Coal. On the news, the shares of James River soared 15% to $23.31.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/07/james-river-buys-international-resource-partners/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>James River Shells Out $475 Million for Two Coal Deals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/07/james-river-buys-international-resource-partners/">James River Shells Out $475 Million for Two Coal Deals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 11:20:00 EST. The problem is that, with the emergence of tablets, the market is feeling some pressure. While Marvell has been moving hard into the mobile space, the results have been muted.</p>
<p>So, it should be no surprise that the company's recent <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/04/us-marvell-idUSTRE7227MV20110304">earnings report</a> was fairly lackluster. In fact, the shares were off 8% to $16.75 in morning trading.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/marvell-technology-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marvell Technology: Feeling the Pain from Tablet Megatrend?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/marvell-technology-earnings/">Marvell Technology: Feeling the Pain from Tablet Megatrend?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. There are a growing number of devices and platforms -- many of which are top-notch.<br />
<br />
So, in the case of Disney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>), it realizes it is impossible to pick a winner. Thus, it looks like the company is making wagers on a variety of platforms.<br />

With the contraction in the telecom market, the sales for equipment has plunged.</p>
<p>Yet since September, investors have been piling into Alcatel-Lucent as the shares have gone from $2.80 to $5.34. The reason? Well, the smartphone megatrend is a key factor. As carriers bolster their networks, they need to go to providers like Alcatel-Lucent.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/03/alcatel-lucent-buyout-rumors/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Alcatel-Lucent Buyout Bait?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/03/alcatel-lucent-buyout-rumors/">Is Alcatel-Lucent Buyout Bait?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 12:20:00 EST. Not only have equities surged, but so have commodities. Nice, huh?<br />
<br />
But according to Bill Gross, who manages the world's largest bond fund (Pimco), things may <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/41867238">get turbulent</a> when QE 2 ends in June. After all, where will the next big catalyst come from?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/pimcos-bill-gross-watch-out-for-the-end-of-qe2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pimco's Bill Gross: Watch Out for the End of QE2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/pimcos-bill-gross-watch-out-for-the-end-of-qe2/">Pimco's Bill Gross: Watch Out for the End of QE2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST.
