Marker Close: Another Listless Trading Day (BAC, NVDA, TXN, AMD, BIDU, YHOO)

The market went up and then down. By the end of the trading day, most of the indexes were in the red, but not by much. The two pieces of news that traders had to digest both came early in the day. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales rose 7.6% to a seasonally adjusted rate of 4.13 million. Housing market progress is still painfully slow. Weekly jobless claims, a notoriously fickle number, rose 12,000 to 465,000. A better indication of the job market -- continuing claims -- fell 48,000 to 4.49 million. The figure is still staggeringly large and a sign the the joblessness problem remains firmly entrenched.

The numbers:

Dow Jones 10,662.42 -76.89 (-0.72%)
S&P 500 1,124.83 -9.45 (-0.83%)
Nasdaq 2,327.08 -7.47 (-0.32%)

Advanced Micro Devices: Good Report, But Should You Stay Away?

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has fared poorly so far this year. The one-year chart is a somewhat depressing figure to look at for long-term shareholders. But will things change going forward?

Back in April, I called AMD a potential buy-on-the-dips name. I was wrong. And, yes, I'm more cautious today than I was yesterday. You've got to take to heart what the charts are telling you, and in this situation, the technical story is communicating a high degree of risk, at least in my opinion. It's a pity, too, because the chip maker not only issued a decent report after the bell on Thursday, but investors in the extended-hours session responded with a bid, sending the shares higher by 2% at one point.

Intel Scores Big in Q2 -- Buy the Stock?

Intel (INTC), whose related companies include Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Texas Instruments (TXN), did extremely well during the second quarter. You've got to like the stock at this point. It reacted very nicely in Tuesday's after-hours session following the release of the report, shooting higher by 7%.

The market has been crazy lately, but as Trey Thoelcke highlighted in his preview piece, Intel's stock is currently cheap relative to the industry average.

Advanced Micro Devices: Buy or Avoid After Q1 Earnings?

Earlier this week, Intel (INTC) delivered an impressive quarter; I came away with positive thoughts about the chip maker's long-term prospects. Now, we have Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and its own three-month release to ponder. How was the price action after Q1 results were posted on Thursday following the conclusion of the normal session?

Lousy, at least at the time I was writing this. Shares of AMD tumbled 5% in extended trading. Quite disappointing, when you think about it. After all, the stock had hit a new 52-week high during intraday activities before the report. And the volume? You couldn't ask for a better number of shares in play. There was great conviction behind the buying activity.

Before the Bell: Futures Lower as Investors Mull Earnings

U.S. stock futures fell Friday morning after Google and Advanced Micro Devices disappointed investors. Strong results from Bank of America and General Electric didn't manage to offset sentiment enough to turn futures in a positive direction, but at least stemmed declines.

After U.S. markets closed marginally higher Thursday, the sixth straight gain, investors poured over results from internet search engine giant Google Inc. (GOOG) exceeded expectations with an earnings rise of 37% and revenue surge of 23%, but disappointed investors with loose spending and investors punished the stock 4.5% in premarket trading. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) shares, too, fell 3.6% ahead of the bell, despite reported it returned to profitability in the first quarter.

Intel: How Does the Stock Look After Stellar Earnings?

INTC advances after impressive earnings Intel (INTC), whose colleagues include Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Texas Instruments (TXN), had a nice time during yesterday's after-hours trading. The company's stock was met with buying approval after the impressive first-quarter earnings report was posted. How should investors feel about the stock now?

Well, investors should feel pretty good, I believe. The price action has been encouraging. First, if you examine the one-year chart, you'll see that the stock has been trending higher. Admittedly, it's not the smoothest-looking uptrend, but overall, I think the chip maker is going to continue to climb higher. And the stock has certainly come a long way from the 52-week low.

AMD Recruits Acer in Server Chip Battle with Intel

Intel Corporation (INTC) and scrappy Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) are two tech companies that have been fighting in the microprocessor market for longer than many of us care to remember. Intel controls the majority of the PC processor market for consumer machines and business servers, but AMD always seems to be there to mop up market share with as much gusto as it can. Enter the latest battle originating from AMD's end: recruiting the red-hot Acer to power its servers with AMD chips.

Closing Bell: The Bernanke Question Weighs (AMD, AAPL, COF, GE, HBAN, SOMX, SYNA)

There was actually very little economic news. The news that Ben Bernanke is not a shoe-in for reconfirmation as head of the Federal Reserve caused some pause, while the bank-bashing from yesterday carried over in many names. Five IPOs did not even get the deserved attention despite the notion that this has not been seen in a long time. Here were today's closing bell levels:

Dow 10,163.38 -226.50 (-2.18%)
S&P 500 1,091.07 -25.41 (-2.28%)
Nasdaq 2,204.32 -61.38 (-2.71%)

Intel's Impressive Fourth Quarter

Chip-maker Intel (INTC), whose colleagues include Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Texas Instruments (TXN), issued fourth-quarter data yesterday after the bell. Shareholders must have loved the growth rates. Revenues increased 28% on a year-over-year basis. Adjusted net income on a dollar basis grew well over 200%. Adjusted per-share profit came in at 55 cents versus 15 cents in the comparable period.

As for expectations, Earnings.com says that the market was looking for 30 cents per share. Some coverage compared the 30-cent projection to the reported GAAP income number of 40 cents per share, instead of the non-GAAP number I mentioned above, which would make the earnings beat not as impressive. I usually deal with non-GAAP figures, but either way, Intel has gone above estimates in significant fashion.
