Bit by bit, the IPO market is picking up steam. And, the latest deal hit the markets today: Medidata (NASDAQ: MDSO).
So far, the shares are up 19% $16.70 (the IPO priced at $14, which was above its $11-$13 price range).
Founded about ten years ago, Medidata develops web-based software for clinical trials management. Obviously, it's a big market opportunity.
Keep in mind that a drug costs more than $1 billion to develop. Oh, and the process can easily go beyond a decade. In other words, it's important to streamline the process.

Today was a negative market from the start of trading, and the economic data just confirmed the selling, as hunting for green shoots looked more like hunting for four-leaf clovers. It seems that those analysts and economists saying that the market has risen too far and too fast are getting some more ears than in recent weeks.
The
housing data showed a dip after two months of rising data, and the New York Empire Manufacturing data
came in weaker than expected. Even the
Iran turmoil after the election failed to rally oil. Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

S&P 500 923.81 -22.40 (-2.37%)

When a $7 a share biotechnology company like
Dendreon Corp. (NASDAQ:
DNDN) rockets 200% to over $20 a share in one day, like it did yesterday after reporting
successful Phase 3 trials of its prostate cancer drug, investors get interested in any biotech stock under $10.
But before investing in these speculative companies, you should have a clear understanding of how this niche operates. Marketing plays an important role in order for the companies to raise capital, therefore if you are interested in betting on a company's future, you should consider the risk factors and odds of success.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says if you need money for anything important in the near future, get it out of the stock market. Fall back. Fall back to basic principles. What do people have to do whether they want to do it or not? What do governments have to pay for whether they want something or not? What must be used whether you like it or not?
That's where we are right now in the helter-skelter pell-mell race to take all stocks to single digits as the notion of a worldwide global depression sinks in.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) announced a
deal to acquire rival
Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) for $68 billion, or $50.19 a share, a 15% premium to Friday's close of $43.74. This cash-and-stock deal is the largest in the drug sector since 2000 and many see it as a precursor to a flourishing M&A season as the credit markets are slowly starting to improve. Pfizer also reported a 90% profit drop for the fourth quarter due to charges. PFE shares declined 3.4% in premarket trading, while WYE shares gained nearly 5%.
Barclays (NYSE: BCS) shares surged in London Monday after the
firm reassured investors in a letter to shareholders it didn't need more capital. But France's
BNP Paribas said it would take more cash from the government following a 1.4 billion euro ($1.8 billion) loss in the latest quarter. Finally,
ING (NYSE: ING), the Dutch financial services firm, also received government aid as it is expected to announce it had a net loss of 3.3 billion euros in the fourth quarter, that it would cut 7,000 jobs, and that its CEO would step down. BCS shares gained over 44% in premarket trading and ING's gained over 19%.
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) and
McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) are two Dow components set to report earnings this morning. CAT said its
fourth-quarter profit fell to $661 million, or $1.08 a share, from $975 million, or $1.50 a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 6% to $12.9 billion. For 2009, Caterpillar gave a a much lower guidance than analysts had expected, $2.50 vs. $4.35 EPS. CAT also said it would slash 20,000 jobs. CAT shares fell over 11% in premarket trading.
Meanwhile, MCD delivered what at first glance seems to be
better-than-expected earnings of 87 cents vs. 84 cents. It even plans to invest $2.1 billion of capital to open about 1,000 new McDonald's restaurants.
American Express (NYSE: AXP) is the third Dow component tor report quarterly results after the close of trading today and is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings of 20 cents a share.

The first trading session of the 2009 may have brought some optimism with it as markets rallied, but it's difficult to imagine all our troubles over after a year that set one bad and worse record after another. Stocks mirrored the global economic slowdown brought on by the housing market and the financial markets crises.
Still, there are many who still seek to invest in hope that one day they could get nice returns on their investments. While the recent volatility in the stock market benefited some shrewd day traders, most investors know to stick to a long-term, stable investment plan.
To help achieve some of these long-term return, BloggingStocks contributors continued to suggest some companies to invest in, as well as some to avoid:
Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI) -- despite having his confidence in the stock shaken somewhat lately as sales may have been softer than expected, Steven Mallas is still bullish on the stock and feels it is
attractive at these levels.
Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ:
TTWO), however, "seems a little
scary to be buying in now," he says.

There were a few stocks in 2008 that exhibited great performance despite horrible market conditions. And these gems of 2008 may provide investors with a safe haven of sorts for 2009.
In fact, we are already hearing analysis of the year to come suggesting that biotechnology stocks will be the place to be for positive returns in the new year.
One such name to consider is Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN).
Founded in 1980, AMGN is one of the largest biotechnology companies in the market. It has a stable of proven drugs that provides significant profits, and a pipeline of opportunities that should provide reasonable growth in the future.
Shares of AMGN have gained approximately 20% during the last year as investors recognized the value of current profits combined with future growth. Interestingly, the company really gained traction during the second half of the year as the rest of the market was imploding.
Even with the gains, AMGN is a compelling investment story.
Shares trade for 15 times trailing earnings and only 12 times forward earnings. That means you can buy shares for a price-to-earnings ratio that is lower than its growth rate.
One reason for the optimism in the stock in 2008 was the progress made on its osteoporosis drug, Denosumab. Analysts are expecting the drug to be a blockbuster.
Denosumab has done well in trials, and AMGN recently applied for FDA approval to bring the drug to market. Given the expected 10-month FDA review and processing period, AMGN is only a year or so away from the sales benefits of this new drug.

Voting continues in our Best & Worst in Money 2008 feature, and it looks like early favorites include falling gasoline prices, Wal-Mart, Joe the Plumber, and former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Did they get your vote?
Close races include the Breakout Person of the Year, in which vice presidential contender Sarah Palin and Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps duke it out for first place, while poor Neel Kashkari, who is in charge of the U.S. Treasury's financial relief funds, is in last place with only about 6% of the vote.
The Most Disturbing Consumer Trend is another close race, with plunging retirement accounts and falling home values virtually a tie. It's also a very close race between Wall Street and Kmart for Most in Need of a Makeover. Not much interest in making over Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX), however, as it has only about 4% of the vote in that category.
Lower fuel prices are clearly the most popular Silver Lining to the Recession with about 62% of the vote so far. Joe the Plumber, with 57% of the vote, has a clear lead over distant second place Rev. Jeremiah Wright as the Most Notable 15 Minutes of Fame. And disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer leads the Biggest Fall from Grace category with about 56% of the vote.
