Broadcom Earnings: Buy or Sell

Broadcom (BRCM), maker of semiconductors for the communications industry, had a tough time in Tuesday's extended-hours session after the company released its latest earnings report. The stock went down 6% to a quote of $43.55. That was quite the reversal of fortune, as the shares had closed the regular session higher by 2.9%, settling out at $46.39. The 52-week high is $47.39, so the pullback might be considered a bit of a disappointment.

Then again, is a pullback in this name an opportunity? The business made, on an adjusted basis, 75 cents per share in the fourth quarter, according to MarketWatch. This was one penny better than the consensus estimate.

Closing Bell: QE2 Giveth and Taketh Away (BIIB, BAC, BRCM, PGI, REE, BWLD)

Durable goods sounded good on the surface until the transportation component was removed and after a look at many sectors in business spending. The trend belief is now that quantitative easing (QE2) is going to be lower in dollars and be spread out over a longer period. This all leads to some give-back for stocks, and longer-term bond yields rose as well.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Broadcom: Sideways Action Creates an Opportunity

Semiconductor provider Broadcom Corp.'s (BRCM) shares, first discussed here on June 8, 2009 at a price of $25.82, meandered this summer, but just look on that sideways action as an extended opportunity to scoop up shares of a promising business model at a decent price. Here's why:

In 2010, Broadcom will likely post an eye-opening 40-45% revenue increase, propelled higher by an increase in corporate information technology spending.

Further, from a macro-trend standpoint, there's little to suggest that the secular trend of broadband and mobile connectivity in the globalization era is fading.
