On Thursday, Dillard's (DDS) announced that it plans to form a wholly-owned real estate investment trust. The company will transfer some of its properties to the REIT and then lease back the properties from the entity. The company said that the move may enhance its ability to access debt or preferred stock and improve its liquidity.
The market is currently pricing REITs at rich valuations, and the transaction will allow Dillard's to better monetize its significant real-estate assets. By transferring these holdings into a publicly traded REIT, Dillard's should be able to unlock additional shareholder value. According to Craig Johnson, an analyst at Customer Growth Partners, "the sum of the parts can be greater than the sum of the whole."

It's not enough to be on every metropolitan street corner; now Starbucks (SBUX) is trying to be even bigger (in one sense of the word) -- and faster, too. Thirsty folks longing for a Big Gulp-style coffee beverage are in luck as the Seattle-based coffee chain is set to roll out its new "Trenta" size for iced drinks.
The new size, seven ounces bigger than the Venti, will be 31 ounces. Trenta, by the way, means "thirty" in Italian. It's also a valley in Slovenia and a small town in the Italian province of Cosenza. This new size trumps Dunkin Donuts, which offers its iced beverages in 24-ounce serving sizes.

In another sign that auto industry has bright day ahead of it, Ford Motor Company (F) announced today that it planned to hire an additional 7,000 employees over the next 2 years.
While this is definitely good news, the figures are still way down from where they were before the auto crisis ravished the industry. Ford currently has 42,000 compared to 103,000 just ten years ago.

Monday morning, the publisher of iconic adult magazine Playboy (PLA) announced that it will take the company private, thanks to a "sweetened offer" from the magazine's founder Hugh Hefner. The offer of $6.15 per share represents an 18% premium from the stock's Friday close. The total offer values the company at $207 million. Back in July, Hefner's Icon Acquisition Holdings LP offered $5.50 per share.
Playboy has had other offers, including an offer of $210 million from rival Penthouse magazine. That said, Hefner is Playboy's largest shareholder with roughly 70% of the company's voting shares and 28% of the company's nonvoting stock. Hefner noted that the "agreement will give us the resources and the flexibility to return Playboy to its unique position and to further expand our business around the world."

The battle among iPhone carriers is fierce. Apple's (AAPL) iPhone is the prized device. AT&T (T), Verizon's (VZ) rival, has had the an exclusive hold on the iPhone. Verizon has been trying to play catch up. Now that Verizon will have the iPhone, the playing field will change dramatically. Verizon, with about 93 million subscribers, could grab an estimated 10 million new subscribers with the iPhone, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The move is also a big boost for Apple. Apple has been feeling the pressure from Google (GOOG), with its Android system. Android phones passed the iPhone in sales in the second quarter. This move to Verizon will open up a new expanded base for Apple.

While Salesforce.com (CRM) is the clear leader in cloud computing, the company still has serious competitive threats. In fact, the company is making some major changes -- with the goal of going to the next-level. Salesforce.com calls this "cloud 2.0."
A key to this strategy is acquisitions. Last year, Salesforce.com made six deals (they included Jigsaw, Sitemaster, Activa, Live Chat, Heroku and Etacts). And with a huge market cap and cash pile, Salesforce.com is certainly positioned nicely for more transactions in 2011.

Zynga's unusual twist to gaming has caught the imagination of players around the world and spurred them to play Zynga games. Zynga now has a quarter million users.
Zynga is a worldwide gaming site. Their games offer a different "take." Unlike standard games that move from beginning to finish, Zynga's games require an "energy" characteristic to play. Engaging in "Mission" is a core feature of many games which consumes a certain amount of energy. After expending energy, it slowly replenishes the character's maximum limit. This can take minutes or several hours. In the meantime, players can obtain game credits that allow them to replenish their character's energy or receive premium currency that could be exchanged for other various virtual goods. (Wikipedia)

The stage is set for a recovery in certain industries. They've been hit hard the last three years, pounded by a slow economy. But now things are starting to change, and if you believe the worst is over, then these sectors should see good advances in 2011.
Car Companies: They're hiring. Toyota Motors (TM) just announced the re-opening of its Mississippi plant after being dormant for two years. It needs 2,000 workers. GM (GM) is hiring 1,000 engineers and researchers in Michigan over the next two years focused on hybrid and electric cars. Chrysler is looking for 1,000 engineers and others to create small and midsize vehicles in its partnership with Italy's Fiat. Fiat controls Chrysler. Ford is the most healthy of the U.S. producers, having never touched government funds.

When it comes to cloud computing, Oracle (ORCL) has been late to the party. After all, even Microsoft (MSFT) has a growing position in the space.
But Oracle appears to be ramping up things. That is, the company has launched Oracle Cloud Office. Based on technology gained from the Sun acquisition, this offering has the full suite of web-based apps for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and databases.

The list of stocks under consideration has been reduced from eleven to ten, to seven and now in today's story four. Starting with five major defense contractors and six major oil companies (see Chasing Value: You Must Own Defense and Oil for Safety), I began a search to find one stock in each sector that might be suitable for inclusion in my list of 2011 stock picks posted last week Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- The Journey Begin.
Today we continue our analysis by examining return on equity (ROE), return on invested capital (ROIC), and price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG). Each stock is ranked by sector and metric from best to worst. Sometimes there are clear winners and others there is little to separate one stock from the next. However, in total, a picture can be drawn that does portray a superior opportunity.

Perhaps it is the cynic in me, but I was not surprised to read this story about Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) from Bloomberg. The news outlet obtained an e-mail that was sent to Walmart managers instructing them to raise prices on an average of 1,800 types of toys per store. The managers were instructed to perform the price markups "as soon as possible" and were told that the price changes were "to better enable your store and the company to have a successful financial month."
Walmart stated that these price increases went into effect because temporary discounts on products (including toys) ended on November 30. Spokesman Ravi Jariwala, spokesman for Walmart, said in an e-mail, "Once a rollback ends, the item returns to its original everyday low price." That said, Eric Johnson director of the Center for Digital Strategies at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth noted that "In previous years Wal-Mart has come out and hammered everyone with unbelievably low toy prices ... They stepped away from that this year and after Thanksgiving their prices have crept back up."
