U.S. stock futures edged higher Friday following robust results from Amazon and Microsoft and as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was confirmed for a second term. But still ahead are GDP figures, which Wall Street will focus on to get a clearer picture of economic activity.
At 8:30 a.m., the government will disclose
fourth quarter gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity. Most likely, the economy grew in the fourth quarter for a second straight quarter and possibly at the fastest pace in nearly four years. Analysts estimate the economy grew 4.5% in the final three months of 2009, according to Thomson Reuters. Much of it was due to the stimulus, economists say, and if that stops, they worry growth would slow, or even stop.

The Street.com's Jim Cramer says that he's making it his mission in 2010 to call out people in the media who provide no value.
Have you ever noticed that with every good housing report there are endless caveats:
1. Prices are still down year over year.
2. The home tax credit of $8,000 moved the house, and that will go away.
3. Home mortgages are artificially low because of the Fed.
4. Banks have more foreclosures on their balance sheets than before.
5. Foreclosures continue to occur.
6. Everything will slip back to imbalance when the credit goes away.

Wall Street watchers can be excused for feeling a little whipsawed this week. After watching stocks lose ground early in the week, they roared back Thursday, riding high on a bevy of upbeat earnings reports. That enthusiasm remains partially on display this morning with two of the three major U.S. stock indexes showing a positive opening ahead of the morning bell.
At about 7 a.m. ET, the Nasdaq Composite Index and S&P 500 were slightly higher, while the Dow Jones industrial average was down by about 4 points. The Dow gained 1.3% Thursday to close the session at 10,081.31, led by the strong earnings reports from five of the benchmark index's 30 component stocks.

An update on two short positions:
McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:
MCD), recommended
on June 26, 2009 at a price of $57.00, and
Fortune Brands (NYSE:
FO), recommended
on the same day at a price of $35.56.
McDonald's: Hold Short. MCD's shares remain under pressure. The era of the 'frugal consumer' is well underway in the United States, to McDonald's detriment. There's also a trend away from standardized fast food, and toward local, 'roadside' hamburger joints and diners: they offer unique flavors and recipes, fresher food, and often atmospheres that can't be beat.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says don't heed the pundits -- allow yourself to believe things are improving. Skeptical, or impossible? That's how I am posing the dilemma of the "pull through" argument whether it involves
Ford (NYSE:
F) (
Cramer's Take) and "Cash for Clunkers" or
Hovnanian (NYSE:
HOV) (
Cramer's Take),
Lennar (NYSE:
LEN) (
Cramer's Take),
Toll (NYSE:
TOL) (
Cramer's Take),
KB Home (NYSE:
KBH) and
Pulte (NYSE:
PHM) (
Cramer's Take) and the $8,000 tax credit.
Right now any time there is a stimulus program of any sort, the pundits/media/money managers all decide the most important single issue isn't what it will do to the numbers, or whether it will work at all, but what will it do to the "pull through." How much of future sales will it "steal"?

Investor and trader Mishko Janusevich had a mantra that he used to repeat while outlining the top, new stock shorts that appeared that day, as determined by technical indicators.
He would stand next to the overhead projected stock chart at the front of the trading room, point to the stock chart and recite, "You see this stock? You see that it's dropped $8 in past two days? You think it can't drop any more? SELL THAT STOCK it's dropping more!!"
Short these shares if you can tolerate high-risk and are an experienced investor that does not remove Buy/Stop Losses:

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says horrible outlooks from competitors Diageo and Masco make FO a stock to sell in this market. What do you do if Johnnie Walker's slowing and Merillat cabinets aren't moving? I think you sell
Fortune Brands (NYSE:
FO) (
Cramer's Take).
Both
Diageo (NYSE:
DEO) (
Cramer's Take), the liquor king, and
Masco (NYSE:
MAS) (
Cramer's Take), the cabinet and plumbing king, reported earnings. While Diageo didn't deliver terrible numbers and boosted its already bountiful dividend, its outlook was horrible.
Masco all around was just plain horrible. Huge quarterly dividend cut to 7.5 cents from 23.5 cents, miserable outlook and a sense that things are spiraling as housing starts get slashed to ribbons.
