Corning: LCD Play and More

Is Corning's Inc. (GLW) latest quarterly performance signaling something about the drivers of U.S. GDP growth in the years ahead? Perhaps.

Corning, the world's largest manufacturer of liquid crystal displays, reported first quarter earnings of 52 cents per share on strong demand for flat-screen TVs in China. The performance trounced the 45 cent Thomson/Reuters First Call first quarter estimate.

First quarter revenue rose 57% to $1.55 billion, compared to the First Call estimate of $1.58 billion.

Corning Drops on Insider Selling

Chairman and CEO Wendell Weeks sold over 200,000 shares of the stock last Thursday, according to an SEC filing, while Company COO Peter Volanakis also about 80,000 shares on the same day. While Weeks regularly cashes in some of his stock each quarter, this recent amount is bigger than any in the past year.   • Goldman upgraded Corning (GLW) to buy from neutral as they believe the LCD cycle may have bottomed in 4Q09 vs. their previous expectation of 2H10. The firm raised its target to $23 from $18. Corning (GLW) CFO touts LCD demand

GLW logoCorning (GLW - option chain) shares are rising today after the company's CFO Jim Flaws said in an interview on CNBC last night that demand for LCD panels used in flat-panel televisions and netbooks has been "outstanding." He added that GLW's customers have seen a "surge in LCD television demand." Cramer on BloggingStocks: Negative stories get all the play

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says maybe it's dull copy, but you never read about the positive drivers anymore.

The bulls have just put together a quiet but widespread rally that, once again, has gone unheralded or is regarded as unimportant.

But the slide that we look like we are going to have will quickly take on a huge significance, with lots of commentary about all of the usual fiascos and woes and worries. Maybe today we will make it "we don't have a strong president or a strong dollar" day. Or an "OPEC isn't going to get oil to $80" day.

Pick one. They all suit.

'Green shoots' for Corning (GLW)

"Corning (NYSE: GLW) is seeing green shoots; it recently announced significant gains in demand for LCD glass due to strong TV sales," says Tracey Ryniec of Zacks Research.

"Overall, LCD TV demand remains hot. The company is seeing much stronger demand for glass in the second quarter than it anticipated even just a few weeks ago.

"Corning is a specialty glass, ceramics and optical fiber manufacturer. It produces glass for LCD flat panel televisions and laptops, ceramic substrates and filters for mobile emission control systems, cable for Internet communication networks and advanced optics and specialty glass for various industries.
