OVTI logoOmniVision (OVTI - option chain) stock is trading sharply lower today after Sony (SNE) CEO Howard Stringer said late Friday that his company is supplying camera components to Apple (AAPL). This could pose a threat to OVTI's AAPL business, as OVTI had been the main supplier of image sensors for the iPhone. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on OVTI.

This morning, OVTI opened at $34.06. So far today the stock has hit a high of $34.10 and a low of $32.20. As of 12:15, OVTI is trading at $33.15, down $3.04 (-8.4%). The chart for OVTI looks neutral and S&P gives OVTI a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

The chip competition for the iPhone and iTablet is incredibly fierce. A little company called Nvidia's (NVDA) design won so far with its Tegra 2. Its shares are up almost 50% since December. Texas Instruments (TXN) is also a player in tablet chip market with its OMAP5 processor.

Now, Qualcomm QCOM) is joining the fray with its new APQ 8060 dual core Snapdragon processor. It allows for high definition and 3D video. Hewlett Packard is using it in its new "Touch Pad."

Verizon (VZ) logoThe battle among iPhone carriers is fierce. Apple's (AAPL) iPhone is the prized device. AT&T (T), Verizon's (VZ) rival, has had the an exclusive hold on the iPhone. Verizon has been trying to play catch up. Now that Verizon will have the iPhone, the playing field will change dramatically. Verizon, with about 93 million subscribers, could grab an estimated 10 million new subscribers with the iPhone, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The move is also a big boost for Apple. Apple has been feeling the pressure from Google (GOOG), with its Android system. Android phones passed the iPhone in sales in the second quarter. This move to Verizon will open up a new expanded base for Apple.

apple third quarter earningsShares of Apple Inc. (AAPL) traded sharply higher in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company posted strong quarterly results for its third quarter.

Analysts had been expecting to see the company post earnings of $2.84 a share, but Apple easily beat that estimate with a reported $3.51 a share. During the same period last year the company had earnings of $1.35 per share.

Since hitting a high of $279.01 on June 21, Apple shares have dropped over 7.7% to close Thursday at $251.45. This morning, ahead of its iPhone 4 press conference, Apple shares fell 0.7% by noon trading. The iPhone 4, which was to be yet another smashing success has become a somewhat sore issue. While at first sales of the new phone once again blew past expectations, reports of bad reception and dropped calls immediately tarnished the new must-have gadget.

But "antennagate," as it's been dubbed, just began, especially with Apple's response to consumers: avoid gripping the phone in the lower-left corner. Consumer Reports then said it can't recommend the iPhone 4 after tests by its engineers confirmed that the device does indeed have reception problems. And Bloomberg reported that a a senior antenna engineer named Ruben Caballero personally raised concerns about the design to Jobs.

So Apple then announced it will hold a press conference at 10 AM Pacific time on Friday. That's in two hours. What to expect?

There is quite a bit of Internet chatter about Apple's (AAPL) new iPhone 4. Unfortunately for the tech company, a good deal of it is negative. There is a problem with reception for the iPhone, a problem that stems from touching "a spot" on the lower left side of the phone. This problem caused Consumer Reports to say that it "can't recommend the iPhone 4." On July 2, Apple tried to explain that the problem was not the antenna, but that it was a calculation mistake that makes it appear that there were two more bars of reception -- seriously. Apple did offer to fix the problem with a free software update (available in a "few weeks") for the iPhone 4, 3, and 3GS.

A pricing battle between Barnes & Noble (BKS) - which makes the Nook -- and Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) -- parent of the Kindle -- leaves consumers the winners, as the devices are now priced south of $200.

The WiFi-only Nook is now available for just $149 (the 3G version is priced at $199) and the 3G-enabled Kindle has been marked down to $189 from $259. That's a 27% savings. It's also conveniently $10 less than the comparable Nook.

diamond ringWell, guys, it's become a little easier for your girlfriend to hint for that engagement ring. On the plus side, it's become easier for you to shop for one. Tiffany & Co. (TIF) has launched a new app for Apple's (AAPL) iPhone, and it may just become a girl's best friend.

The free app, called the "Engagement Ring Finder," allows a would-be groom (or bride) to browse through shapes, settings, metals, designs, and carat sizes (only up to 2.5 carats, so the super generous among you will have to visit a TIF store). It is also possible to view the rings from various angles and look at them "actual size." Users can save their favorite looks to consult with friends and family via text, email, Facebook, and Twitter.
