Closing Bell: A Stealth Rally from Somewhere (AA, C, GE, INTC, MCD, NVDA, CRM)

The DJIA came within striking distance of 12,000 today. There was no major economic data and it is another melt-up rally. The news comes despite rising rate trends in China and India and despite the trends of inflation. It also comes in light of a Moscow, Russia airport bombing that killed more than 30 people.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,980.52 +108.68 (0.92%)
S&P 500 1,290.84 +7.49 (0.58%)
Nasdaq 2,717.55 +28.01 (1.04%)

Intel Increases Buyback Plan and Boosts Dividend

INTC logoIntel (INTC - option chain) shares are rising today after the company announced that it has added $10 billion to its stock buyback plan, hoping to return money to its shareholders after a rise in businesses' tech spending lifted the company's earnings. Also in the announcement, INTC confirmed it will bump its quarterly dividend higher by 15% to 18 cents per share. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on INTC.

INTC opened this morning at $21.03. So far today the stock has hit a low of $20.93 and a high of $21.23. As of 12:20, INTC is trading at $21.16 up 0.34 (1.6%). The chart for INTC looks bullish and S&P gives INTC a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.

Intel Still Worth a Look?

Intel (INTC)Intel (INTC) reported earnings earlier in the week. Connie Madon captured the bullet points of the latest quarter. Here's the question: should investors buy the chip stock?

The shares finished on Friday down slightly to $21.08. That's a few bucks lower than the 52-week high of $24.37. It's also a few bucks higher than the 52-week low of $17.60. The chart shows a stock that's been up and down over the past 12 months. Indeed, I've been bullish on Intel, and so far, I can't say that the company has risen like I thought it would. Traders, though, must be having a ball with the narrow range.

Comfort Zone Investing: Can You Feel the Pendulum Swinging?

a golfer swinging - economic pendulum - comfort zone investingEconomies go in cycles. They push to their breaking points, then move in the opposite direction. We saw it clearly in the '90s when there was no end to up (except there was and we abruptly hit it in 2000). In 2008, it felt like there was no end to down. But we now know there is. Things are picking up, and there are numbers to prove it.

Don't be the last to figure out we're in an economic recovery. Sitting on the sidelines, waiting for one more chance to buy a stock at the bargain price you saw in March of 2009 isn't going to happen. Times have changed. The U.S. economy is on the mend.

Closing Bell: Inflation No Threat, Retail Sales Rise, Market Inches Higher (CPIX, INTC, CSTR, SBIB, NANO)

Government reports that the US inflation rate came in at 1.5% for 2010 (or just 0.1% excluding energy and food prices) produced little enthusiasm in the markets. Even a 0.4% increase in retail sales during the holiday season didn't give traders a push. Probably because they were expecting better. Both oil and gold prices have fallen today, and the dollar is slipping against the euro as currency traders judge that US consumers just don't have the heart to spend in a big way. US markets are closed Monday in observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here are the numbers for early afternoon trading today:

Dow Jones: 11,787.38 +55.48 (0.47%)
S&P 500: 1,293.24 +9.48 (0.74%)
Nasdaq: 2,755.30 +20.01 (0.73%)

Spread Speculator Bets on Additional Upside for Nvidia

The shares of Nvidia (NVDA) have been tearing up the charts in 2011, thanks to a lucrative settlement with Intel (INTC) and a high-profile new partnership with ARM Holdings (ARMH). The month of January isn't quite half-over yet, but the stock is already sitting on a year-to-date gain of 51.6%.

Judging by at least one headline hitting the wires, the stock's rapid rise is making some analysts nervous. However, on Wednesday, one upbeat options trader placed a bet on additional upside from NVDA during the near term.

Closing Bell: Chalk Up a Win (AA, BP, NVDA, INTC, AAPL, SVU, VZ, MBI)

Tuesday was an up-day on most index readings as earnings season gets further underway. The notion that there are no blow-ups so far is helping to ease some fears of the cautious bulls. A private placement from Portugal also may have helped out even if that is more cause of concern longer-term. Another snow storm is about to shut down the Eastern Seaboard all over again. These are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones: 11,671.81 +34.36 (0.30%)
S&P 500: 1,274.47 +4.72 (0.37%)

Microsoft to Feature New Chips With Next Windows

Microsoft (MSFT) logoFor years Microsoft (MSFT) was the tech leader. Then, Google (GOOG) came along and Microsoft missed the entire search engine revolution. But Microsoft still dominated in software. Then came Apple (AAPL) with its iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Again, Microsoft missed the small device revolution.

The Wall Street Journal reports that now Microsoft is playing catch-up again. With its next operating system it will use low-powered chips similar to those Apple uses.
