The DJIA came within striking distance of 12,000 today. There was no major economic data and it is another melt-up rally. The news comes despite rising rate trends in China and India and despite the trends of inflation. It also comes in light of a Moscow, Russia airport bombing that killed more than 30 people.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow Jones 11,980.52 +108.68 (0.92%)
S&P 500 1,290.84 +7.49 (0.58%)

Economies go in cycles. They push to their breaking points, then move in the opposite direction. We saw it clearly in the '90s when there was no end to up (except there was and we abruptly hit it in 2000). In 2008, it felt like there was no end to down. But we now know there is. Things are picking up, and there are numbers to prove it.
Don't be the last to figure out we're in an economic recovery. Sitting on the sidelines, waiting for one more chance to buy a stock at the bargain price you saw in March of 2009 isn't going to happen. Times have changed. The U.S. economy is on the mend.

Government reports that the US inflation rate came in at 1.5% for 2010 (or just 0.1% excluding energy and food prices) produced little enthusiasm in the markets. Even a 0.4% increase in retail sales during the holiday season didn't give traders a push. Probably because they were expecting better. Both oil and gold prices have fallen today, and the dollar is slipping against the euro as
currency traders judge that US consumers just don't have the heart to spend in a big way. US markets are closed Monday in observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Here are the numbers for early afternoon trading today:
Dow Jones: 11,787.38 +55.48 (0.47%)
S&P 500: 1,293.24 +9.48 (0.74%)
Nasdaq: 2,755.30 +20.01 (0.73%)

Tuesday was an up-day on most index readings as
earnings season gets further underway. The notion that there are no blow-ups so far is helping to ease some fears of the cautious bulls. A private placement from Portugal also may have helped out even if that is more cause of concern longer-term. Another snow storm is about to shut down the Eastern Seaboard all over again. These are today's unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow Jones: 11,671.81 +34.36 (0.30%)
S&P 500: 1,274.47 +4.72 (0.37%)

For years Microsoft (MSFT) was the tech leader. Then, Google (GOOG) came along and Microsoft missed the entire search engine revolution. But Microsoft still dominated in software. Then came Apple (AAPL) with its iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Again, Microsoft missed the small device revolution.
The Wall Street Journal reports that now Microsoft is playing catch-up again. With its next operating system it will use low-powered chips similar to those Apple uses.
