Nintendo (NTDOY), whose competitors include Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE), has had a couple of rough trading sessions. It has to do with disappointment surrounding the release date of the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system -- which will miss the holiday season -- as well a bad profit outlook (I'm presuming the latter issue was more responsible for the bearishness than the former one).
My colleague Gary Sattler gave his opinion on the situation the other day. The question is, should an investor buy the company's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) on pullbacks? What kind of opportunity do they represent? Yesterday, they closed down 4.9% to $31.20. Volume was very heavy.

No one can truly predict the movie business. I can't, certainly. If you had asked me what film would turn out to be the most popular among movie patrons this past weekend, I would have told you that
Devil, distributed by General Electric's (
GE) Universal Pictures, stood the best chance of slithering its evil celluloid self to the top of the heap. As it turns out, I was wrong. Time Warner's (
TWX)
The Town, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, was the winner at domestic theaters, according to
Box Office Mojo.
Town brought in over $23 million as of estimates available at the time of this writing. In second place was
Easy A, from Sony (
SNE), with $18 million.
Devil made about $12 million. The
Los Angeles Times says that all of these projects didn't cost an exorbitant amount to produce.

Lionsgate (
LGF) has now produced two hits in a row.
The Expendables, starring Sylvester Stallone, was third over the past weekend at domestic theaters, according to early estimates at
Box Office Mojo. After completing its third weekend in the marketplace, the movie has generated over $80 million so far in total. Not bad, although it must take in more dollars to break even, as
I mentioned last week.
More impressively,
The Last Exorcism nabbed the top spot. It captured $21.3 million over the last three days. At the time of this writing, though, the second-place film, Sony's (
SNE)
Takers, was credited with an even $21 million. Once final figures are available later on, it's possible the rankings could change.

Lionsgate (
LGF) continued its reign at the domestic multiplex.
Last weekend, the studio was No. 1 with
The Expendables. This past weekend, the film was popular enough to repeat the feat, taking in $16 million, according to estimates from
Box Office Mojo. The project has grossed well over $60 million so far.
News Corp.'s (
NWS)
Vampires Suck, Sony's (
SNE)
Eat Pray Love, and Time Warner's (
TWX)
Lottery Ticket just couldn't keep up with the action flick. The first two movies grossed about $12 million each, while
Ticket took in around $11 million.

Microsoft (
MSFT -
option chain) shares are rising today after company CEO
Steve Ballmer touted the company's new tablet Windows devices at a conference, saying, "This year, one of the most important things that we will do in the smart device category is really push forward with Windows 7-based slates." Ballmer said new tablets running Windows 7 are in development from Acer, Dell (
DELL), Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony (
SNE), among others. Microsoft is hoping to compete directly with Apple's (
AAPL) iPad tablet, which has seen brisk sales since being introduced earlier this year. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on MSFT.
MSFT opened this morning at $24.43. So far today the stock has hit a low of $24.42 and a high of $24.84. As of 12:20, MSFT is trading at $24.72 up 0.45 (1.9%). The chart for MSFT looks bullish and
S&P gives MSFT a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.

I've got to laugh. As I've related in prior pieces, I've owned shares of Disney (
DIS) for a long, long time. Too long, actually, since the company hasn't been a great investment over the last decade. I mean, the stock isn't above $40 yet? And I thought it would reach that level by this summer. Talk about being wrong.
And why should it be over $40 by now? Well, there was this acquisition of a little business called Pixar some years back. Remember that? Remember how it was supposed to transform the company into a powerhouse source of entertaining animated projects? Even better, the implied presumption was that the market would reward the stock for CEO Bob Iger's intelligent move; after all, he was supposed to be the Mouse's savior after it ran into trouble with erstwhile leader Michael Eisner.

How much do you love your Apple (AAPL) iPad and iPhone? Would you be willing to make them?
As you know, many of the electronic products we enjoy are made by factory workers overseas. Foxconn, located near Hong Kong in Shenzhen, China, is one of the big manufacturers of all things electronic. It employs about 300,000 workers who will be getting a hefty 30% raise in October to 2,000 yuan per month. After several suicides among its employees, the company has been under pressure to improve working conditions at its factories.

When you think 3D TV, the possibilities are limitless. That game-winning touchdown pass spiraling out of your flat screen, alien invaders flying ships through the screen ... and yes, even naked women strutting their stuff in your living room.
It's this latter and controversial content that is fueling the 3D business in Japan right now, where a pair of porn stars are leading the charge in developing three-dimensional entertainment that is compatible with Sony (SNE) and Panasonic (PC) televisions.

Private conglomerate Virgin Group has had its hands in everything from airlines to media to mobile phones. It even has its own vodka brand, launched in 1994. But according to a new website set to launch June 15 called VirginGaming.com, it appears that the next Virgin venture will be video games. The debut is going to be watched closely by many publicly traded video game studios, including Sony (SNE), which has partnered with the site on a promotional deal for one of its games.

Oh, GameStop (
GME) is one tough stock for me to look at, let me tell you. Earlier in the year, I took a
lousy loss on it, only to see the shares
rebound. After the rebound, they started to go down again. And now, with international issues destroying the markets, there's added confusion following the release of the company's first-quarter report.
The chart, as they say, says it all. Over the last
twelve months, the stock has confounded the traders (well, maybe I should just speak for myself and say it's confounded me). There's been no solid direction to the shares as players attempt to figure out exactly where the business model is going. Can it withstand the threat of games-by-download? Can it compete with the casual titles people play on mobile platforms? And what about Best Buy Co., Inc. (
BBY), Target Corporation (
TGT), and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (
WMT)? They want their share of the industry, too. As an example, Wal-Mart wants to engage
used entertainment software.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NTDOY) is an entity I've been cautious on. I've made money on it before, but to be honest, even though it has done very well for some market players in recent months, I find the ADRs difficult to buy. They are currently priced at $42.45. I would really like to see them a lot lower before entertaining a trade.
Problem is, I'm not sure when, or if, they will go lower (not in the short term, anyway). They're currently near a 52-week high, and after a news item I just read, I have to admit I'm feeling more and more bullish on the business.
