Verizon Releases Details on the iPhone Release

Verizon (VZ) logoA couple of days ago, Connie Madon reported here that Verizon (VZ) had finally landed Apple's (APPL) iPhone 4. Today the communications firm started to introduce details about the release. The first question to answer is when the iPhone will be released - which is February 10 according to Verizon's Internet site. MarketWatch reported that the iPhone 4 will be available for pre-order on February 3.

The popular smartphone will cost $199 for the 16GB version and $99 for the 32GB version. These are the same price points for the device on the AT&T (T) network. One difference between the carrier's versions is that the Verizon version will also work as a wi-fi hotspot (with credit to the Engadget blog's live coverage of the event). This mobile hotspot will be able to support up to five different devices.

Verizon Finally Gets the iPhone

Verizon (VZ) logoThe battle among iPhone carriers is fierce. Apple's (AAPL) iPhone is the prized device. AT&T (T), Verizon's (VZ) rival, has had the an exclusive hold on the iPhone. Verizon has been trying to play catch up. Now that Verizon will have the iPhone, the playing field will change dramatically. Verizon, with about 93 million subscribers, could grab an estimated 10 million new subscribers with the iPhone, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The move is also a big boost for Apple. Apple has been feeling the pressure from Google (GOOG), with its Android system. Android phones passed the iPhone in sales in the second quarter. This move to Verizon will open up a new expanded base for Apple.

Closing Bell: The Return... (ATHR, QCOM, T, FDO, MOS, NVDA, TRID)

Today was a great day with better than expected data from the Institute of Supply Management and from ADP and TrimTabs employment projections. Still, there was a mix of performance today with M&A and mixed earnings reactions, as well as with guidance reactions.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,722.89 +31.71 (0.27%)
S&P 500 1,276.56 +6.36 (0.50%)

Top Picks 2011: AT&T (T)

AT and T logoThis post is one in a series in which more than 60 newsletter advisors share their Top Stock Picks for 2011. This special report is courtesy of TheStockAdvisors.com.

"The good folks at AT&T (T) have seemingly accomplished what all the kings horse's and all the king's men could not; they have put Humpty Dumpty back together again," says dividend specialist Michael Minney.

The editor Investment Quality Trends explains, "While not a mirror image of the 'old' Ma Bell, the latest incarnation of AT&T is arguably much better.

Chasing Value: New Years Quick Takes

Can you hear me now? Well listen closely, Verizon Communications (VZ) is going to get a bounce from the Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone in 2011. Nothing you don't already know. Is there a more sure thing in the coming year? Long term it will fade some, but in 2011 the pent up demand has to have a positive impact.

Communications: The telephone companies everywhere are going to have a good year. Verizon is a great stock for Roth IRA's, paying a 5.41% yield. The dilution of the iPhone market may hurt AT&T, Inc. (T) some, as VZ is helped, but it too is a good long term hold and pays an even higher yield at 5.76%.

If you want to diversify internationally there are multiple good choices and they pay even higher yields.

Chasing Value: Don't Be Happy -- Worry!

What a terrible message for the holiday season, with consumers swooping up bargains, lines at the Apple, Inc. (AAPL) Store, the stock market only going up, and a majority of economic prognosticators simply glowing at the prospects for 2011. Perhaps it is contrarians that should follow the "don't ask, don't tell" military rule just signed out of existence by president Obama today.

Unfortunately I can't help myself. I have to ask, I have to tell. When I see everyone get too giddy, I start to put on the breaks and slow down. It is not that I wish unhappiness upon people. I just want them to refrain from being lemmings. Some percentage of the market's upswing is short covering, and some can be attributed to momentum investors and market timers (big mistake) but that is 100% speculation and zero percent investing.

Cox Communications Launches Cell Phone Service

Cox Communications logoThe wireless communication world is about to receive a new entrant, as the country's third-largest cable company will start a cellular network in three areas today. The company? Cox Communications.

Before you think that this wireless network will be available across the U.S., Cox's wireless offerings will be available in Orange County, California; Omaha, Nebraska; and Hampton Roads, Virginia. These three locales are where Cox is the local cable company, and they hold roughly 1.5 million residents.

AT&T: Old Reliable

The stock of AT&T (T), first written about here on February 11, 2009, at a price of $25.89, recently pushed $30, after meandered near $26 for the better part of a year, and I obviously still like the shares here.

AT&T remains well-positioned to remain a force in the Internet/communications revolution in the years ahead. Look for AT&T's revenue to grow about 2% to 4% in 2011, led by an impressive increase in cell phone customers (which numbered about 93 million as of June 2010) and wireless data service customers. In 2010, revenue should rise 1% to 3%.

Clearwire May Auction Parts of Wireless Spectrum

Clearwire logoClearwire (CLWR - option chain) shares are rising today on reports that the company will auction some of its wireless spectrum in order to raise $2.5 billion to $5 billion. According to Bloomberg, potential bidders for the spectrum include AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), Deutsche Telekom, Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Sprint (S). If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on CLWR.

AT&T to Lose 1.4 Million iPhone Users to Verizon?

Regarding the buzz as to whether Verizon (VZ) will sell the iPhone early next year, there seems to be little debate anymore. Now, Wall Street analysts are trying to figure out the fall-out.

Take Credit Suisse analyst, Jonathan Chaplin. He has been crunching numbers and making forecasts. And according to his model, he thinks that roughly 1.4 million AT&T (T) iPhone customers will switch over to Verizon.

It's definitely a serious number.

Chasing Value™: Tale of Two Tech Stocks (ISRG and SCON)

You win some you lose some. This story is about one of my less successful investments, which I acquired and sold many years ago. Over the past four years, I have written many times about Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), by far my best stock investment, up 4,500%, give or take, over a ten-year period. I bought in at the bottom and held on for the ride, until last year when the market tanked and took Intuitive Surgical with it.

The other company was Superconductor Technologies (SCON), the makers of high-temperature devices that improve communications transmission quality.

AT&T Jumps into the Mobile Location Biz

AT&T logoOne of the hottest categories in tech is location-based services (LBS). Essentially, this means using your smartphone's GPS capability to show friends your current location. One of the early leaders in the space is Foursquare, which recently snagged a large amount of venture capital. But other players are diving in. For example, Shopkick recently rolled out a pilot of its LBS platform to allow shoppers at Best Buy (BBY) to get discounts. And of course, Facebook recently launched its Places capability.

In fact, now AT&T (T) is getting into the game. The telecom giant has teamed up with an LBS startup, SCVNGR, which has a rewards system for the iPhone and Android. It will be in 50 AT&T stores throughout the Midwest as a trial program.
