NBC got some notice for the Emmys with hit show 24 getting a lot of nominations, but overall NBC trailed HBO, ABC, and CBS in general nominations, still leaving it the lesser of the 'big three.' HBO, with some 95 nominations, certainly stood out. Its ability to create shows without network censor oversight is no doubt a source of continuing frustration to networks like NBC which cannot get away with being as edgy. The FCC and networks are still, however, battling that one out in the courts.

Apple excels at getting free publicity
You might think that Apple pays big bucks to be seen on some of TV's most popular shows - "The Office," "CSI:NY," "24," or "Las Vegas," for example. Well it doesn't.
Apple gets all this visibility for free. In fact the trade journal Hollywood Reporter said that Apple's products found their way onto TV shows 250 times in the past four months. Wow! That's a lot of free air time.
Apple says it doesn't pay for any of this placement, but also would not discuss how it does it. Its secret probably is related to the fact that Apple was the first technology company to hire an LA representative who focuses on getting Apple products on TV shows and into movies. Tim Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies, says other top tech companies are following Apple's lead including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Toshiba. Bajarin said Apple's exposure is "not an accident. This is something Apple works at. Apple has the longest history of doing this."
