Sometimes the market likes QE2 and sometimes it doesn't. Today is a day where the markets are struggling to to figure out what influence to follow. Gold was above $1400 and oil hit new recent highs, but both gave some back today as the market correlation between the dollar and other markets was not tick for tick.
Some are taking profits ahead of the election tomorrow and ahead of any quantitative easing announcements due from the FOMC on Wednesday. Strong manufacturing led the charge up this morning, and 30-Year Treasury bonds were back above 4.00% late in the afternoon. The real direction of the close was not going to be known until the final minutes by the feel of it.
The new consensus is that the double-dip recession scenario is gone and that quantitative easing will also still occur. The dollar gave back on some of yesterday's gains, and that helped gold and oil and related assets. Then the Fed's Beige Book acted like a "economic upgrade" from the Fed.
It was an options expiration date today, and there was no domestic economic news to drive the markets. PC earnings failed to ignite interest and sellers had most of a quiet Friday in August to themselves.
A higher oil forecast from the EIA also lent more credence to a sustained growth despite some tempering of those growth estimates.
The bond insurer swung to a loss of $57.6 million in the second quarter, and warned that a bankruptcy filing is likely if it can't come up with a plan to restructure its liabilities within the next year.

The company's official release stated the matter quite plainly: "Ambac has insufficient capital to finance its debt service and operating expense requirements beyond the second quarter of 2011 and may need to seek bankruptcy protection."

Continue reading Puts Popular as Ambac Financial Takes a Post-Earnings Dive

Puts Popular as Ambac Financial Takes a Post-Earnings Dive originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 10 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. During the course of the session, speculators on the ISE bought to open 1,973 puts on ABK, compared to just 726 calls that were purchased. In other words, traders on this exchange purchased 2.72 times more bearish bets than bullish on the bond insurer.

The day's most popular put was the August 1 strike, where 2,784 contracts traded. About 94% of these contracts changed hands at the ask price, revealing they were most likely purchased, and implied volatility on this strike jumped 76.4% by the close. Open interest on the August 1 put increased overnight by 2,261 contracts, confirming that new pessimistic positions were opened here on Monday.

Continue reading Option Bears Place Bets on Ambac Financial Group

Option Bears Place Bets on Ambac Financial Group originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 25 May 2010 11:40:00 EST. World stock markets rebounded Friday after fears Greece would default eased, a day after the country's cost of borrowing went through the roof. While debt-ridden Greece has not asked for the activation of a euro-zone and International Monetary Fund rescue plan designed to prevent a default, Greece finance minister said details of how the plan would operate are being worked out, the AP reported.
Continue reading Before the Bell: Futures Point to Higher Open

Before the Bell: Futures Point to Higher Open originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 08:35:00 EST. Investors are also awaiting a meeting of European leaders with Greece's debt problems in mind. A testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is also in focus Thursday.

Initial jobless claims fell declined by 14,000 to 442,000 -- the lowest level in six weeks -- as the rebound in the economy encourages companies to make fewer cuts in payrolls. The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits decreased 54,000 in the week ended March 13 to 4.65 million, the lowest since Dec. 20, 2008.
Continue reading Before the Bell: Futures Higher After Employment Data

Before the Bell: Futures Higher After Employment Data originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 08:55:00 EST. My colleague Mark Fightmaster reported earlier that Visa (V) is set to replace Ciena Corp. (CIEN) on the widely watched market barometer, but that's not the only SPX development hitting Wall Street today. In fact, struggling insurance issue MBIA Inc. (MBI) is preparing to take its leave from the venerable index.

In a press release late Friday, Standard & Poor's explained that MBIA "currently ranks 500th in the index and is no longer representative of the S&P 500 index market cap space." The beaten-down insurance company will be replaced by Mead Johnson Nutrition (MJN), which is in the process of being spun off by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY).

Continue reading MBIA booted from S&P 500 Index

MBIA booted from S&P 500 Index originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 12:45:00 EST. Harsh comments against Ben Bernanke at his reconfirmation hearing also dominated the news today. We also saw a very weak ISM services number. The company is expected to post a 9% drop in earnings to 31 cents per share, according to Briefing.com. DELL shares were 1.5% higher in premarket trade (8:00 am). Dell shares were 2.7% lower about half an hour after the open.

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is seeking funds from China Investment Corp., Government of Singapore Investment Corp. and at least two other sovereign-wealth funds. GE shares have plunged some 60% this year as the company has lowered 2008 profit target twice. But GE also raised $3 billion last month as Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK) invested in the company. GE shares declined 8.3% around 9:55 am. The company said that while it is in talks with Asian investors about joint ventures, it has no intention of raising additional capital from sovereign-wealth funds.

General Motors Corp (NYSE: GM), Ford Motor Co. The sought after compromise couldn't be reached and the Senate canceled plans for a vote Wednesday. The Bush administration and congressional Republicans have rejected Democrats' plan to dip into the $700 billion Wall Street rescue fund for a $25 billion automotive sector bailout. Interestingly, some think no bailout will not send the stock market off a cliff. Meanwhile, Chrsyler still wants to merge with GM -- little wonder there.

However, GMAC Financial Services has applied to the Federal Reserve to become a bank holding company. If approved, it would allow GM's financing arm to be eligible for aid under the Treasury's $700 billion bank rescue plan, automotive bailout or not. Still, GM shares were down about 10% in premarket trade (8:05 am), just as Ford's were up 3.2% (8:05 am). GM shares were beaten down another 11.5% around 9:55 am, Ford's were down some 4.8%.
Continue reading Stocks in the news: DELL, GE, GM, LTD, PFE, PETM, BA, ABK, C, YHOO ... TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says that's the real problem, and every little bit helps.

Many are decrying that the AIG (NYSE: AIG) (Cramer's Take) bailout now helps the holders of the collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) who bought insurance against them from AIG. The idea is simple: These CDOs are worth, in many cases, next to nothing depending upon the vintages, geographies and FICO scores, but they will now be paid back at pretty much face value -- AIG CEO Ed Liddy said the prices will be negotiated, but I don't see how they can get any less because AIG guaranteed it and the U.S. is not abrogating any of these guarantees.

It's an obvious windfall and still one more piece of the stinking puzzle that involves unwinding the bogus real estate finance that prevailed from 2004 to 2007. The bigger issue, though, is whether the government will then take over MBIA (NYSE: MBI) (Cramer's Take) and Ambac (NYSE: ABK) (Cramer's Take) -- I know people at those companies say they don't need it, so OK, they don't ... but let's say they do for the purposes of reality -- and have them make good on all of the credit default swaps they wrote against bad CDOs.

If the government is willing, they can buy several trillion dollars of these easily through this method and then sit on them and hopefully they will come back to some value.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Fix the home glut

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Fix the home glut originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 09:30:00 EST. The company lost 2.4312 billion dollars -- but apparently it was too humiliating to put it that way. So the result is a ludicrous press release headline that reads Ambac Financial Group, Inc. Announces Third Quarter Net Loss of $2,431.2 Million.

Mark-to-market losses on credit derivatives amounted to $2,705.2 million with a smattering of gains and losses in others categories making up the remainder.

I understand that reason behind using the $2,431 million figure: in the company's balance sheet and income statement, figures are quoted in millions. But for the headline of the press release, it's a little weird to stick with that format: telling investors "We lost two-thousand four-hundred million dollars!" does not exactly inspire confidence.

Moody's announced on September 18th that is reviewing the company for a possible downgrade and the deterioration in the economy since then would not seem to bode well for the company's future. There could be many more thousands of millions in losses to come.
Ambac can't bring itself to say the B-word originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 17:27:00 EST. But if Tuesday markets rallied, today it seems we're witnessing a "sell on the news". President-elect Obama will inherit a troubled economy and that what Wall Street is back to focusing on this morning. Some data could contribute to current sentiment as the October ADP employment numbers will be released before the opening bell and October ISM services after. weekly energy inventory data are also out for release. Oil prices declined ahead of the data to around $68.30 a barell.

Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) reported an 18% growth in profits from continuing operations, and profit of 31 cents per share (excluding items), beating analyst estimates. Time Warner also lowered its outlook for full-year earning primarily because of layoffs at Time Inc. Energy-related companies are well represented again this week and expectations in general remain high.

The earnings of phosphates producer Innophos Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: IPHS) are expected to have risen 92.3% to $3.37 per share. Innophos beat estimates in the previous quarter by a whopping 210%, and analysts have been impressed with Innophos's lack of debt and pricing gains despite the slowing economy, so, on average, they recommend buying IPHS.

Also early in the week, analysts expect Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (NYSE: GT), Kaiser Aluminum Corp. (NASDAQ: KALU), and Oshkosh Corp. (NYSE: OSK) to report that their profits fell 52.9% to $0.33 per share, 45.1% to $0.67 per share, and 41.2% to $0.67 per share, respectively. These companies have tended to beat estimates in recent quarters, and the consensus recommendations of analysts are to buy them. However, PMI Group Inc. (NYSE: PMI), one of the largest private mortgage insurance providers in the U.S., is expected to take another hit as the housing slump drags on. The California-based company is expected to have widened its net loss from $1.04 per share a year ago to $2.43 per share in the most recent quarter. Its shares are down 84.5% from a year ago, and have been trading recently near their 52-week low.

Continue reading The week in preview: Expectations remain high for energy and oil

The week in preview: Expectations remain high for energy and oil originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST.
