Analyst upgrades:
- Natixis expects Alcatel-Lucent's (NYSE: ALU) results to improve in 2H09, driven by the CDMA segment and completion of Lucent integration. Shares were upgraded to Buy from Reduce.
- RBC Capital upgraded Canadian Pacific (NYSE: CP) to Outperform from Sector Perform and raised its target to $67 from $49. The firm expects a return to "normalized" operating environment driven by Potash and MetCoal.
- Credit Suisse upgraded Affiliated Managers Group (NYSE: AMG) to Outperform from Neutral and raised its target to $69 from $64. The firm cites valuation, potential upside from 2H09 deals, and expectations for positive 2H09 flows for the upgrade.
- Kennametal (NYSE: KMT) coverage was assumed with a Neutral from Underweight at JPMorgan.
- Cardinal Financial (NASDAQ: CFNL) was upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Baird.
- General Maritime (NYSE: GMR) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at FBR Capital.

"Amedisys (NASDAQ: AMED), a provider of home health services," notes Richard Moroney, whose Upside Stocks newsletter uses a quantitative system to select high growth, smaller cap issues.
"The company operates more than 500 locations, focuses on Medicare-eligible patients because of favorable reimbursement rates as well as a large and growing patient base.
"The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that some 8,000 Americans will become Medicare eligible each day beginning in 2011. By 2030, nearly 58 million baby boomers will be eligible for Medicare benefits.
"In 2007, nearly 90% of the company's revenue was derived from Medicare. "Acquisitions and market-share gains should fuel strong results. In addition, Amedisys should benefit from an aging population beset by chronic illnesses.
"The company has developed specialized services that focus on high-cost diseases and chronic conditions. An estimated one-half of the U.S. population will have a chronic condition in 2020, or nearly 160 million people.

Analyst upgrades:
- Societe General upgraded BASF AG (OTC: BASFY) to Buy from Hold. The firm believes the bad news is out and that BASF has a strong market position.
- Pali Capital upgraded Hot Topic (NASDAQ: HOTT) to Buy from Neutral based on the ongoing merchandise catalyst, the opportunity to reclaim the mainstream kid and closing underperforming stores, which create the most favorable conditions in the last 5+ years.
- Stanford upgraded L-1 Identity (NYSE: ID) to Buy from Hold on valuation, and the firm sees little risk to the company from the Obama Administration.
- Gymboree (NASDAQ: GYMB) and Windstream (WIN) were raised to Overweight from Neutral at JP Morgan.
- Doral Financial (NYSE: DRL) was upgraded at B. Riley to Buy from Neutral.
- Alumina (NYSE: AWC) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS.
Analyst downgrades:
- Credit Suisse downgraded Targanta (NASDAQ: TARG) to Underperform from Outperform following the FDA Panel's rejection of Oritavancin.
- Citigroup downgraded BASF AG (OTC: BASFY) to Sell from Hold and sees no reason to own the stock following the company's profit warning. Shares were also downgraded at WestLB to Hold from Add.
- Deutsche Bank downgraded shares of Amedisys (NASDAQ: AMED) to Hold from Buy and lowered its target to $53 from $75 on concerns over the company's deteriorating A/R aging trends.
- VeriFone Holdings (NYSE: PAY) and Navios Maritime (NYSE: NMM) were lowered to Neutral from Overweight at JP Morgan.
- NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM) was downgraded at Citigroup to Hold from Buy.
Analyst initiations:
- Needham expects shares of Cepheid (NASDAQ: CPHD) to be driven by continued market penetration in the hospital acquired infection market, new test introductions, GeneXpert Infinity sales, and molecular diagnostics growth from sales outside of traditional molecular testing areas. Shares were initiated with a Buy rating and $21 target.
- Needham also initiated Gen-Probe (NASDAQ: GPRO) with a Hold rating and expects market share gains for the company when PANTHER is approved in 2010/2011.
- William Blair believes Harbin Electric (NASDAQ: HRBN) is an "interesting" opportunity for exposure to rapid growth in infrastructure within the People's Republic of China. The firm started shares with a Market Perform rating.
- Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX) was initiated with a Buy rating and $11 target at UBS.
- NutriSystem (NASDAQ: NTRI) was initiated with a Neutral rating at Janney Montgomery.
- Ener1 (NYSE: HEV) was assumed at JMP Securities with an Outperform rating and $9 target.

- JMP Securities upgraded Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) to Outperform from Market Perform based on valuation.
- Goldman Sachs upgraded Chico's (NYSE: CHS) to Neutral from Sell based on valuation.
- Blue Coat (NASDAQ: BCSI) was raised to Hold from Sell by Brean Murray.
Analyst downgrades:
- UBS dropped Burger King (NYSE: BKC) to Neutral from Buy due to the company's slowing sales trends and commodity pressure.
- Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) was downgraded to Sell from Neutral by Banc of America based on valuation.
- Pacific Sunwear (NASDAQ: PSUN) was downgraded to Neutral from Outperform by Baird, which cited the company's Q2 results and reduced guidance.
Analyst initiations:
- UBS initiated O'Reilly (NASDAQ: ORLY) with a Buy because they are positive on its recent CSK Auto acquisition and its valuation.
- Baird started Amedisys (NASDAQ: AMED) with an Outperform because they view the recent pullback in the shares as a compelling entry point.

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Quiksilver, Omniture and Crown Holdings were today's noteworthy upgrades:
- B. Riley upgraded shares of Quiksilver (NYSE: ZQK) to Buy from Neutral on valuation and to reflect the EPS catalyst and debt reduction associated with divesting Rossignol.
- Friedman Billings upgraded shares of Omniture (NASDAQ: OMTR) to Outperform from Market Perform following the recent pullback, as they believe the company is in its best competitive position ever, which should drive increasing win rates and help restore pricing power.
- Banc of America upgraded shares of Crown Holdings (NYSE: CCK) to Buy from Neutral to reflect the company's international exposure and believes metal packaging companies should be better able to manage input inflation.

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals (MIPI) were today's more notable initiations:
- Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) was initiated at Bernstein with an Outperform rating and $46 target, citing a compelling diversification alternative for cable/CMCS investors. Goldman started Time Warner Cable with a Neutral rating and $44 target.
- Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: MIPI) was initiated at RBC with an Outperform rating and $18 target. RBC said Molecular Insight is a leader in developing and commercializing superior radiopharmaceuticals for the treatment and management of life-threatening diseases. Jefferies initiated shares of Molecular Insight with a Buy rating and $20 target, saying Zemiva has blockbuster potential.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
- UBS started Amedisys, Inc (NASDAQ: AMED) with aBuy rating and $39 target.
- Goldman Sachs initiated TransCanada (NYSE: TRP) with a Buy rating.
- Credit Suisse initiated Tim Hortons Inc (NYSE: THI) with an Outperform rating.
