Analyst upgrades:

  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Blackstone Group (BX) to outperform from market perform following the company's Q3 results and maintains an $18.50 price target on shares.
  • Baird upgraded Astec (ASTE) to outperform from neutral citing relative valuation and upside from new multi-year U.S. highway funding legislation. The firm raised its target to $33 from $27.
  • Goldman upgraded Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) to conviction buy from neutral citing "significant" long-term growth drivers that include international growth. The firm raised its target to $45 from $36.
  • Ariad Pharmaceuticals (ARIA) was upgraded to overweight from neutral at JPMorgan.
  • Energizer (ENR) was upgraded to overweight from equal weight at Morgan Stanley.
  • AstraZeneca (AZN) was upgraded to buy from hold at RBS.

Analyst upgrades:

  • Deutsche Bank upgraded Cemex (NYSE: CX) to Buy from Hold on decreased dilution risk following the company's successful refinancing and raised its target on shares to $15 from $11.20.
  • Rochdale upgraded Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) to Buy from Neutral and raised its target to $65. The firm is positive on Wal-Mart's defensive characteristics, cyclical upside, and competitive position.
  • JPMorgan upgraded Gartner Group (NYSE: IT) to Overweight from Neutral to reflect stabilization in IT industry spending and the stock's attractive valuation. The firm has a $23 price target on the stock.
  • Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays.
  • Borg-Warner (NYSE: BWA) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill.
  • Nanometrics (NASDAQ: NANO) was upgraded to Outperform from Perform at Oppenheimer.

Analyst initiations: ARIA, FNB and FO

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Ariad Pharma, FNB Corp. and Fortune Brands were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Jefferies finds Ariad Pharma (NASDAQ:ARIA) compelling as they believe the market potential for deforolimus in cancer is being underappreciated. Jeffieries initiated Ariad with a Buy rating and $8 target.
  • B. Riley assumed coverage of FNB Corp. NYSE:FNB) with a Neutral rating and $15 target and sees limited viable lending opportunities in the current economic environment.
  • Wachovia initiated Fortune Brands (NYSE:FO) with an Outperform rating and is positive on the company's position in Spirits. The firm believes its Home business is weighted towards the less cyclical remodels business.

MAJOR PAPERS:
  • Amid mounting criticism for its role in the subprime crisis, McGraw Hill Companies Inc (NYSE: MHP) replaced Kathleen Corbet, the president of Standard & Poors, with Deven Sharma, a McGraw Hill senior VP who has been with S&P since the end of last year, reported the Wall Street Journal.
  • Barron's Online's "Inside Scoop" column reported that Aeropostale Inc (NYSE: ARO) CFO Michael Cunningham sold $2.1M in stock Monday at an average price of $22.43 per share, according to SEC data.
