According to InvestorPlace's survey of NPD figures, consoles systems saw a 10% increase in sales. Microsoft's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas" class="inlinked">MSFT</a>) Xbox 360 was particularly robust. The Nintendo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>) Wii didn't do badly, either.</p>
<p>As you might imagine, there were other companies mentioned in the article. Electronic Arts (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/electronic-arts-inc/erts/nas" class="inlinked">ERTS</a>) scored pretty well, as did Activision Blizzard (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas" class="inlinked">ATVI</a>). In fact, the latter's latest Call of Duty entry is apparently still selling a bunch of copies in retail shelves even though the holiday season is long gone.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/11/video-games-do-all-right-in-february-which-stock-should-an-inve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video Games Do All Right in February: Which Stock Should an Investor Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/11/video-games-do-all-right-in-february-which-stock-should-an-inve/">Video Games Do All Right in February: Which Stock Should an Investor Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. What goes up must come down, though, eventually. Jobless claims were under 400,000 and at the lowest levels since summer of 2008. There were mixed reports that President Mubarek was stepping down, although a speech late in the day confirmed that he will just still not be running for office but will remain in charge for now. <br />

Activision Blizzard (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>) is, as I write this, down 9.8% to $10.54. The intraday low so far is $10.51. The 52-week low is $9.99; the 52-week high is $12.65. The volume number is huge, way above average. There's the price perspective; what about some fundamental news? Management released earnings results for the fourth quarter yesterday after the bell. They weren't bad, really: non-<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Generally%20Accepted%20Accounting%20Principles%20-%20GAAP">GAAP</a> income increased four pennies to <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/activision-blizzard-reports-december-quarter-and-calendar-year-2010-financial-results/rfid413093718/?channel=pf">53 cents per share</a>. This was two pennies ahead of the estimate, according to <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=atvi">Earnings.com</a>. But there were a couple items in the report that made traders want to bolt.<br />
<br />
Let's start with the big headline. You see, the <em>Guitar Hero</em> asset, a peripheral/software system once well-known as a game with high quantities of play value, is now more famous (then again, infamous might be the preferred term) for its crashing popularity. Execs at the publisher have decided that it is <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/investing/activision-discontinues-guitar-hero-narrows-earnings-loss/19837592/">no longer in the interest</a> of shareholder value to continue making titles. Hey, Viacom (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/viacom-inc-cl-b/via.b/nys">VIA.B</a>) is no longer interested in <em><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/11/viacom-up-on-earnings-numbers/">Rock Band</a></em>, so this does make a bit of sense, right?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/10/activision-blizzard-buy-the-dip/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision Blizzard: Buy the Dip?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/10/activision-blizzard-buy-the-dip/">Activision Blizzard: Buy the Dip?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/take-two-interactive-software-inc/ttwo/nas">TTWO</a>) reported earnings for the fiscal third quarter yesterday after the bell. Today, the market expressed its pleasure with the results. In fact, a new 52-week high of $15.50 was set this session.</p>
<p>At the time of this writing, the quote going across my screen was $14.82, a price that was representative of a 2% gain. Volume conviction is definitely present. Looking at the one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/take-two-interactive-software-inc/ttwo/nas/tech-chart">chart</a>, it can be seen that the uptrend in the shares continues on following the making of a low point near the end of August.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/09/take-two-trades-up-on-earnings-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Take-Two Trades Up on Earnings News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/09/take-two-trades-up-on-earnings-news/">Take-Two Trades Up on Earnings News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/electronic-arts-inc/erts/nas">ERTS</a>) received a downgrade today, according to <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/ERTSid1363156/ERTS-Electronic-Arts-downgraded-to-Hold-from-Buy-at-Brean-Murray">TheFly</a>. The company is now considered a hold by Brean Murray. What should investors make of this change? <br />
<br />
Well, looking at it a little over an hour to go before the end of the day, it's notable that the stock is up 1.6% to $15.37 and that volume isn't overwhelming. Encouraging? Perhaps. Whenever there's a downgrade, shareholders usually must brace themselves for a sell-off. Thankfully, that didn't happen in this case.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/24/electronic-arts-how-does-the-stock-look/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Electronic Arts: How Does the Stock Look?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/24/electronic-arts-how-does-the-stock-look/">Electronic Arts: How Does the Stock Look?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 16:40:00 EST. I think the shares remain interesting, and I'm wondering if they could be a viable trade idea at this point.<br />
<br />
This idea is not without significant risk. To begin with, the video-game industry still has its challenges: we're getting along in the current console cycle, and now, not a few gamers/investors are wondering when the next one will begin. Plus, Take-Two is arguably a candidate for profit-taking after its recent run-up (please see the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/take-two-interactive-software-inc/ttwo/nas/tech-chart">chart</a>). Management will issue its next <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/take-two-interactive-software-inc-to-report-fiscal-third-quarter-2011-results-on-tuesday-february-8-2011/rfid403589755/?channel=pf">quarterly report</a> on February 8. Do you want to be in the stock ahead of this event? It's an important question to ask.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/13/is-take-two-a-trade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Take-Two a Trade?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/13/is-take-two-a-trade/">Is Take-Two a Trade?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 17:00:00 EST. What about traders?</p>
<p>This is a tricky one. And I've been wrong about THQ's prospects before. It's certainly difficult to predict the movement of a stock that's priced in the single digits. It's a fun stock to watch. And the company is pretty fun, too. How can you not like the business behind both<em> Call of Duty</em> and <em>Pitfall</em>? </p>
<p>Those who've read my prior pieces on this subject probably know what I'm about to say in regard to the recent bullishness in the shares: Take profits now. Yes, the stock continues to scare me a bit. Well, maybe more than a bit. I know that the latest <em>Call of Duty</em> title is doing <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/company-news/call-of-duty-black-ops-sales-1-billion-and-growing/19772819/">incredibly well at retail</a>, but I also know that <em>Guitar Hero</em> is no longer on every teenager's Christmas wish list. Offsetting elements can be a problem, keep in mind.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/23/activision-blizzard-are-the-bulls-right/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision Blizzard: Are the Bulls Right?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/23/activision-blizzard-are-the-bulls-right/">Activision Blizzard: Are the Bulls Right?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 10:40:00 EST. The numbers sent the stock higher in the extended-hours session: Shares gained over 6%, rising to $12.68. Is it time to buy?<br />
<br />
Take-Two is getting interesting, I have to admit. I was bearish on the company <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/02/take-two-interactive-buy-or-sell/">back in July</a>. Now, the recent price action and the strong stats have got me looking quite seriously at the bull case.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/17/take-two-has-a-great-quarter-should-you-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Take-Two Has a Great Quarter: Should You Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/17/take-two-has-a-great-quarter-should-you-buy/">Take-Two Has a Great Quarter: Should You Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. Ahead of tomorrow's FOMC meeting, we briefly had 10-year Treasury Notes at the highest yields since June. The FOMC was reportedly looking for $110 billion in Treasury purchases over the next month.<br />

Today, I'm going to briefly comment on the price movements of three that I am watching.</p>
<p>Activision Blizzard (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>) is currently down 3% to $11.52, with significant volume backing the sell-off. Down, is that right, you ask? Yes, I'm afraid it is. I know: <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops</em> is doing excellent business. Millions of copies have been sold, and hundreds of millions of dollars <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/company-news/new-call-of-duty-sets-first-day-gaming-sales-record/19713555/">have been grossed</a>. Unfortunately, when it comes to trading on such news, the best bet is to sell out on any anticipatory rise that manifests itself before the event finally occurs.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/12/a-look-at-three-stocks-atvi-dwa-intc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Look at Three Stocks: ATVI, DWA, INTC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/12/a-look-at-three-stocks-atvi-dwa-intc/">A Look at Three Stocks: ATVI, DWA, INTC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 15:15:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/thq-inc/thqi/nas">THQI</a>) reported earnings for the fiscal second quarter last week. How does the stock look after the numbers? <br />
<br />
Well, to begin with, we're dealing with an equity that is priced in the single digits. At the time of this writing, shares were exchanging hands for $4.14. The 52-week low is $3.33 while the 52-week high is $8.29. As can be seen from the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/thq-inc/thqi/nas/tech-chart">chart</a>, the stock has basically collapsed since peaking back in April. If you look at the corporate <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/thq-reports-fiscal-2011-second-quarter-results-in-line-with-guidance/rfid383325877/?channel=pf">press release</a> detailing the Q2 data, you may understand what all the bearishness is about. Also, the top line experienced a decline.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/08/time-to-check-in-on-thq/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time to Check In on THQ</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/08/time-to-check-in-on-thq/">Time to Check In on THQ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST. Strong volume accompanied the dip. It's a shame, because the latest earnings report wasn't all that bad. </p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/activision-3q-earnings-more-than-triple/1201457/">Associated Press</a>, adjusted income of 12 cents per share was three pennies ahead of the consensus estimate. The top line, after taking into account some items, also beat projections. Furthermore, management raised its outlook for the full fiscal year.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/05/activision-blizzard-down-following-third-quarter-results/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision Blizzard Down Following Third-Quarter Results</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/05/activision-blizzard-down-following-third-quarter-results/">Activision Blizzard Down Following Third-Quarter Results</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. How should investors view the stock?<br />
<br />
Right now, I'm not so positive on the shares. They were trading at a quote of $11.39 at the time of this writing. The 52-week low for the shares is $9.93; the 52-week high is $12.58. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas/tech-chart">chart</a> shows an up-down pattern that probably doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in investors. You get the feeling that putting capital to work in this name will inevitably lead to a dead-money situation.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/03/activision-blizzard-set-to-report-earnings-buy-the-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision Blizzard Set to Report Earnings: Buy the Stock?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/03/activision-blizzard-set-to-report-earnings-buy-the-stock/">Activision Blizzard Set to Report Earnings: Buy the Stock?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. I do. It's a fun sector. And there's such theoretical potential for growth (assuming compelling titles are produced that can compete with casual online offerings and can command a decent price premium).<br />
<br />
But you're nervous. I know I am. We've been hearing how the industry isn't necessarily doing as well as it had been. And with the latest sales report, we have further confirmation that caution may be the best strategy for investors when it comes to dealing with ideas like Activision Blizzard Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>) and Electronic Arts Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>) is trading down this afternoon. At the time of this writing, the video-game publisher behind the <em>Call of Duty</em> series was off by over 4% to $10.82. Volume was heavy.</p>
<p>That's an interesting move for the stock, because it may be an opportunity for very short-term traders who are willing to take on extremely significant risk. I haven't felt comfortable about an Activision Blizzard trade for a long time. I would love for the shares to dip below $10 at some point; then, I might have reason to start a position.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/16/activision-blizzard-trading-down/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision Blizzard Trading Down</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/16/activision-blizzard-trading-down/">Activision Blizzard Trading Down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 16:30:00 EST. The first is that one in seven people lived in poverty last year according the US Census. That is nearly 44 million people. The Census describes these people as members of four person families that make less than $22,000 a year. <br />
<br />
Two other pieces of data that showed the economic dreams of many American is eroding were RealtyTrac reported foreclosures hit an all time high since the <a class="inlinked" href="http://realestate.aol.com/information/foreclosure-help">housing crisis</a> began. In July the figure rose to 95,465. Also in the housing sector, <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Fannie%20Mae,Federal%20National%20Mortgage%20Association">Fannie Mae</a> research reported that while a majority of Americans (67%) continue to believe that buying a home is a safe investment, this fell 16 points since 2003. The market may have gotten the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Impression">impression</a> from these pieces of news that the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Recession">recession</a> is not over.<br />

Can you believe the stock was bid to a quote of $10.04 -- a 13% gain?<br />

I myself was impressed. Whenever a psychological level is reached (in this case, above $10 per share), you have to take notice. It may not be logical, of course, but that's how it is.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/03/take-two-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should You Take a Position in Take-Two?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/03/take-two-earnings/">Should You Take a Position in Take-Two?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 03 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. The stock's <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/thq-inc/thqi/nas/tech-chart">chart</a> is pretty bad. I stated in a previous <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/07/should-you-speculate-on-thq/">piece</a> that the stock might possibly justify a little speculation for those who have funds earmarked for such investing purposes. Well, I have to say, I think the situation's speculative nature has increased.<br />

Yesterday after the bell, the company reported it lost <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/thq-reports-fiscal-2011-first-quarter-results-in-line-with-guidance/rfid356222423/?channel=pf">21 cents per share</a> on an adjusted basis during the fiscal first quarter. Last year at this time, a profit of 10 cents per share was recorded. Analysts were expecting a loss of 24 cents per share, according to <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/THQIid1283225/THQI-THQ-Inc-reports-Q-adjusted-EPS-c-vs-consensus-of-c">TheFly</a>.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/10/thqs-q1-not-impressive/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>THQ's Q1 Earnings: Not Impressive</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/10/thqs-q1-not-impressive/">THQ's Q1 Earnings: Not Impressive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 10 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST.
