Atwood's shares are on the move

It goes without saying that I favor oil/oil services plays, including drillers. And it likewise goes without saying that I'm not surprised by contract driller Atwood Oceanics recently climb.

I'm reiterating my Buy rating for Atwood (NYSE: ATW), first recommended on April 25, 2009 at a price of $21.82. If you bought ATW then, you're up a cool 35%.

Consider Atwood, because the world will be oil-hungry again, soon

Readers of this space know that one of the preferred plays is oil/oil services. And why not? Demand for the world's most important commodity has merely paused with the global recession, and it has not been displaced.

True, alternate energy sources will increase in terms of the percentage of total energy consumed in the decades ahead, but oil has such a dominate share it will remain a major energy source for a long time, which is why contract driller Atwood Oceanics (NYSE: ATW) worth a review.

Start drilling offshore: ATW, DO, ESV, HERO, NE, PDE, RDC, RIG

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain It's time to start drilling for oil and natural gas offshore on the east and west coasts. We are wasting our time and our money, and risking our future by not doing so. The energy needs of the United States have made oil our number one import and the biggest factor in our imbalance of trade.

It is not just that oil holds us hostage to the rest of the world. This imbalance of trade means we cannot support ourselves and must borrow from others to get by, and I, for one, have a very hard time with that notion. I prefer independence -- remember that? I think it was an important concept in our founding, way back when.

The imbalance in trade is a mortgage against the future of our children and it is getting worse year after year. The money often goes to foreign governments whose interests are not aligned with ours and they hold us politically and economically captive. Nothing is more shameful than President Bush pleading with Saudi Monarchs to pump more oil.

Atwood Oceanics (ATW): Exploding demand in offshore drilling

"Atwood Oceanics Inc. (NYSE: ATW) is our bet on the exploding demand for offshore oil drilling rigs," says international investment expert Nick Vardy.

The editor of Global Bull Market Alert explains, "Although it's had a big run recently, the stock is as technically oversold as it was when global markets bottomed in mid-March." Here, he outlines why he believe the stock will perform strongly in the coming months.

"Atwood Oceanics Inc. engages in the offshore drilling of oil and gas wells worldwide. It operates eight offshore mobile drilling units located in six regions of the world, including offshore Southeast Asia, Africa, India, Australia, the Black Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

"Atwood is a leveraged play on the price of oil. Oil prices have now blown past the original estimates of major investment banks. Commodities guru Jim Rogers recently predicted that oil will soon hit $200.

"Amid record high oil prices and dwindling supplies on land, the Shells, Exxons and BPs of the world are having to venture into ever harsher and more remote environments offshore to replenish their oil reserves. That puts offshore oil drillers like Atwood Oceanics in the catbird seat.

Atwood Oceanics (ATW): Shares form bullish pennant

Atwood Oceanics (NYSE: ATW) is engaged in the offshore drilling and completion of exploratory and developmental oil and gas wells. It also provides related support, management, and consulting services. The company offers semisubmersible rigs, semisubmersible tender assist rigs, jack-up drilling rigs, and submersible drilling rigs. Atwood has conducted drilling operations in most of the major offshore exploration areas of the world.

The company pleased investors late last month when it reported fiscal Q4 EPS of $1.69 and revenues of $121.6 million. Analysts had been expecting $1.43 and $115.9 million. Separately, the company said its Atwood Southern Cross drilling rig received a contract from Italian energy company Eni SpA AGIP to drill two wells, with options for two more, at a daily rate of $406,000. The project is expected to take 150 days, with a possible extension of 90 days, likely beginning in February. ATW shares popped on the news and then moved into a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.
